Finisar, a manufacturer of optical communications components, will receive $390 million as part of Apple’s commitment to support innovation and job creation by American manufacturers. The award will enable Finisar to exponentially increase its R&D spending and high-volume production of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). VCSELs power some of Apple’s most popular new features, including Face ID, Animoji and Portrait mode selfies made possible with the iPhone X TrueDepth camera, as well as the proximity-sensing capabilities of AirPods. As a result of Apple’s commitment, Finisar will transform a long-shuttered, 700,000-sqare-foot manufacturing plant in Sherman, Texas, into the high-tech VCSEL capital of the US. Apple’s award will create more than 500 high-skill jobs at the Sherman facility, including engineers, technicians and maintenance teams. When combined with the company’s nearby plant in Allen, Texas, Finisar’s payroll in Northern Texas is expected to be $65 million. Hiring, capital equipment planning and infrastructure upgrades are already underway at the Sherman facility, which is expected to begin shipping in the second half of 2018. One hundred percent of the VCSELs Apple buys from Finisar will be made in Texas. Consistent with Apple’s commitment to the environment, the company intends to procure enough renewable energy to cover all of its Apple manufacturing in the US. The new Sherman, Texas Finisar plant will add 500 high-skill jobs to the community.

December 12, 2017: Apple to Create 500 New Jobs in North Texas. Apple created its billion-dollar Advanced Manufacturing Fund to support innovation and job opportunities for American manufacturers. Its latest award of $390 was given to Finisar, a technology innovator and manufacturer of optical communication components and subsystems, to increase the production of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). This fund will usher in a new era of technology-driven manufacturing in the US. VCSELs are smaller and more cost efficient than the conventional edge-emitting lasers. They are used to power many of the features found in Apple devices, such as portrait mode selfies and Face ID. They are used in fiber optic communications, computer mice, laser printers, and precision sensing, along with other applications. All the VCSELs Apple purchases from Finisar will be made in the plant that is set to open soon in Sherman, Texas. The amount produced here will make Sherman the VCEL capital of the US. The facility is expected to begin shipping in the last half of 2018. It will create more than 500 jobs for the residents in the surrounding areas. These jobs will include engineers, technicians, and maintenance teams. Finisar has another plant nearby in Allen, Texas, bringing their payroll in North Texas to an expected $65 million. The opening of this 700,000-square-foot plant, which has been closed since 2012, will do a lot to help the community of Sherman. Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer said, “Technology is only as good as the people behind it, and Finisar is a company with a long history of putting its employees first and supporting the community it’s a part of. We’re extremely proud that our involvement will help transform another American community into a manufacturing powerhouse.” Apple’s commitment to the environment was not lost on this plant, as the company intends to procure enough renewable energy to power all the Apple manufacturing in the United States. Finisar was not the first to receive an award. In May, Apple awarded $200 million to Corning Incorporated, which provides state-of-the-art glass processing. Currently, Apple has created more than 2 million jobs across the United States.
