This feature works quite well as long as you\u2019re in a not-too-noisy environment (however you will have to make corrections at times). You can dictate long emails and short text messages. You can even use dictation to enter search terms in Safari or to enter text in text fields on webpages. Here\u2019s how you can use dictation to save a lot of time typing:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Turn on dictation:<\/em> Go to<em>\u00a0Settings &gt; General &gt; Siri<\/em>, and turn<em> Siri<\/em> on. It must be turned on for speech recognition to work. You can choose which language you\u2019re using, which is useful if you speak with an accent. You can dictate anywhere in iOS where you can enter text, and any time you see the small microphone icon next to the spacebar on the iOS keyboard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To start dictating, tap anywhere you can type text, and then tap the microphone icon. Whenever you see the microphone icon circled, you have the opportunity to dictate. When you begin talking, you\u2019ll see a feedback pane with a wavering line showing the volume of your speech.\u00a0Talk into the microphone and do not try to speak very loudly, speak normally. You should keep your iPhone close to your mouth, especially if you\u2019re outdoors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">When you\u2019re finished, tap\u00a0<em>Done<\/em>,\u00a0and then wait for your words to be processed. Keep in mind that it can take a few seconds for the text to appear.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Also note that dictation in noisy environments works much better with an iPhone, because it\u2019s easier to speak close to the microphone, and because your iPhone has a noise-canceling mic, which filters out background noises. You might find that the Apple earbuds that come with the iPhone \u2013 which have an inline mic \u2013 offer better speech recognition. Third-party headphones with mics will also recognize speech better, as long as you hold them close to your mouth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Dictation to an iOS device requires that your voice be sent to a server, where it is recognized and transcribed, and then sent back to your iOS device. For this reason, dictating to an iOS device works best when you\u2019re using Wi-Fi. Dictation also works well with a 3G connection, but anything slower can be a problem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A few tips to make dictation more efficient:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Speak clearly:<\/em> Speaking too quickly will lead to errors. Speak normally, enunciate, but don\u2019t exaggerate.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Don\u2019t say too much:<\/em>\u00a0Your voice will be sent to a remote server. Try to keep your dictation segments under 30 seconds, as longer than that might be too much for connection.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Take advantage of autocorrect:<\/em>\u00a0You will see words, or even phrases, that iOS thinks might be incorrect. These words appear with dotted blue lines underneath them. iOS will offer suggestions, thus to see one or more options you can choose from, tap an underlined word or phrase.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Speak punctuation and symbols:<\/em>\u00a0To include punctuation in your dictation, you need to say \u201ccomma,\u201d \u201cperiod,\u201d \u201chyphen,\u201d and so on. You can also say \u201cnew line\u201d to dictate a return character, and \u201cnew paragraph\u201d to add two returns. You can say \u201capostrophe\u201d for a possessive noun, such as \u201cMary Leary apostrophe S offer,\u201d for\u00a0Mary Leary\u2019s offer. You\u2019ll also say things like \u201cdollar sign,\u201d \u201ceuro sign,\u201d and \u201cpound sterling sign\u201d to type the corresponding symbols. To capitalize a word, say \u201ccap.\u201d If you\u2019re sending a message about a movie preference, for example, you might say \u201cI\u2019d like to watch cap sherlock\u00a0in the dark.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Using acronyms:<\/em> You should dictate acronyms with care, as some of them work and others don\u2019t. When spelling acronyms, make sure to pause slightly between letters, just enough for them to be discrete. If you need to include an acronym in your dictation, give it a try.<\/li>\n<li><em>Emoticons:<\/em> It is easier to dictate emoticons than to switch to the number keyboard.
