However this mutes all sounds, and you&#8217;ll not be able to listen to songs or other audio files you&#8217;d like to listen.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"How_to_Change_the_Alert_Sound\">How to Change the Alert Sound<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Mac OS ships with various alert sounds and different effects you may choose from, even though most of these effects are variations of subtle and short noises. To customize these sound effects, do the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Go to <em>Apple \u2013 System Preferences<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Open the <em>Sound Preferences Pane<\/em> by clicking <em>Sound<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Click <em>Sound Effects<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Once there, you can choose an option from the Select an<em> Alert Sound<\/em> list. You&#8217;ll hear samples play as you go through the list and click the items.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Use the <em>Alert Volume<\/em> slider to adjust the volume of the alert sound.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">When you select the sound and close the pane, the selected sound remains in effect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"How_Can_I_Disable_a_Boot_Chime_When_I_Start_Up_My_Mac\">How Can I Disable a Boot Chime When I Start Up My Mac?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Yes, it could be annoying to always hear a boot chime when you start up your Mac. Let&#8217;s share this method with you.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Launch <em>Terminal<\/em> (from <em>Applications &gt; Utilities &gt; Terminal<\/em>);<\/li>\n<li>Wait for the Terminal UI to display your computer\u2019s name (root directory) and punch in: CODE sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%80.<\/li>\n<li>Hit <em>Return\/Enter<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Now you\u2019ll be prompted to type in your administrator password. Do that, press OK, and you\u2019re done. When you restart your Mac, the OS X boot chime should no longer play. If you want to have you sound back on startup you need to open <em>Terminal<\/em> and type sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span id=\"About_Visual_Flashing_Screen_Alerts\">About Visual Flashing Screen Alerts<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Even when the audio alerts are used by default, some users prefer to see visual alerts rather then listening to the sound. This functionality is very useful for people with hearing difficulties or for people working in some environments (such as libraries, classrooms, during the night when you don&#8217;t want to awake your family, etc.. At the same time, sound engineers use this alarm because they don&#8217;t want their Macs creating any audio outside of what they are working on). The visual alert option quickly flashes the screen.<\/p>\n<p>To set up screen alerts, do the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open the <em>Universal Access<\/em> preferences pane.<\/li>\n<li>Click the <em>Hearing Tab<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Now choose the <em>Flash the Screen When an Alert Sound Occurs<\/em> check box to create a visual alert. You can also the <em>Alert Volume<\/em> slider in the <em>Sound preferences<\/em> pane to <em>Silent<\/em> (the far left).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"Other_Options_in_the_Sound_Preferences_Pane\">Other Options in the Sound Preferences Pane<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">You can also use these check boxes to decide what type of sound effects, alongside the audio alerts you can play while working with your Mac:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Play User Interface Sound Effects:<\/em> It switches on or off user interface audio, such as the noises that play when user copies files.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Play Feedback When Volume Is Changed:<\/em> The option provides feedback when the user changes the audio volume either by using the volume slider or by pressing the volume button on the keyboard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Play Front Row Sound Effects:<\/em> Front Row Interface is a full-screen interface used to navigate and control media-files.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"How_to_Create_Custom_Alert_Sounds\">How to Create Custom Alert Sounds<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Users can add any sounds they want, and then play these sounds as alerts. To do this, the user can add <em>Audio Interchange File Format<\/em> (AIFF) audio file to the <em>Sounds<\/em> folder. These files have the .aif extension, and the <em>Sounds<\/em> folder is located in the <em>Library<\/em> folder in the <em>Home<\/em> folder. When the user adds <em>AIFF<\/em> file to this folder, it appears in the Sound preferences pane.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Note many sound clips are distributed as AIFF files, but on your Mac, it&#8217;s easy to convert other audio files (such as WAV, MP3, AAC, etc.) to AIFF format. To do this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Open iTunes.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">From the menu bar, choose <em>iTunes \u2013 Preferences<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Click the <em>General<\/em> tab.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Click <em>Import Setting<\/em> to open the <em>Import Settings<\/em> dialog.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Choose AAIF encoder from the<em> Import Using<\/em> pop-up menu.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Click <em>OK<\/em> to close the <em>Import Settings<\/em> dialog.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Click <em>OK<\/em> to close the <em>iTunes preferences<\/em> window.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Choose <em>File \u2013 Add to Library<\/em> in iTunes.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Use the<em> Finder dialog<\/em> to locate the audio file. When you find it, click <em>Choose<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Locate the file in the <em>iTunes Library<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Choose <em>Advanced \u2013 Create AIFF Version<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Drag the created<em> AIFF<\/em> file from the<em> iTunes Library<\/em> to the <em>Home\/Library\/Sounds<\/em> folder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Important:<\/em> You can use iTunes to convert any audio file playable in iTunes into the new default import format. But don&#8217;t forget to to set iTunes preferences to import new files to either MP3 or AAC format after you finish using iTunes to convert files. Otherwise the system will use AIFF format to import new music, and they are much larger than AAC or MP3 files.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">You can also purchase or download apps which provide sound effects on your Mac.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"How_to_Change_Mail_and_iChat_Sounds\">How to Change Mail and iChat Sounds<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Mail and iChat apps make their own sounds, and you can modify them both. If you do so, your Mac will sound highly personable, but try not to annoy those working nearby.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To change sounds in Mail:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Go to <em>Mail \u2013 Preferences<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Use the <em>New Message Sound<\/em> pop-up menu and choose an audio alert you&#8217;d like to hear with upcoming messages, instead of the default <em>New Messages Sound<\/em> option.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Use the <em>Play Sounds<\/em> for <em>Other Mail Actions<\/em> check box to turn sound on and off for sending new messages and so on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To change sounds in iChat:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Go to<em> iChat \u2013 Preferences<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Click <em>Alerts<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Use the Event pop-up menu to choose from the different events that can occur in <em>iChat<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Use the <em>Play a Sound<\/em> pop-up menu to choose a sound.
