The list is almost endless. Although\u00a0Dashboard\u00a0appears in the\u00a0Applications\u00a0folder and on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/igotoffer.com\/apple\/dock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dock<\/a>, it\u2019s not really an application as such. To close the\u00a0Dashboard, tap F12 again, or click the empty space between widgets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The few widgets that are laid out before you when you first open Dashboard\u00a0are not the only ones in your OS X armory. Click the \u201c+\u201d icon in the bottom-left corner to show the\u00a0<em>Widget Bar<\/em>\u00a0along the bottom of the screen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To add widgets to your Dashboard, drag them out of the <em>Widget Bar<\/em> and watch as they come to life. To remove a widget from the Dashboard, click the \u201cx\u201d icon that is visible at its top-left corner when the <em>Widget Bar<\/em> is open.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">An alternative to the<em>\u00a0Widget Bar\u00a0<\/em>is the Widgets widget. Click the\u00a0Manage Widgets\u00a0button when the <em>Widget Bar<\/em> is open to reveal a special widget that replicates the functions of the <em>Widget Bar<\/em>, displaying all your installed widgets. This tool can be used to activate and deactivate widgets, and also features a button for accessing more widgets online.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"Where_Widgets_Reside\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Where Widgets Reside<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">When the mouse pointer hovers over a widget, you may see a little \u201ci\u201d. Click on it to access the widget\u2019s settings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Each individual widget is a little application. Unlike regular apps, which tend to live in your <em>Applications folder<\/em>, widgets are located in two special locations within your hard disk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Macintosh HD \u2013 Library \u2013 Widgets<\/em>:\u00a0Widgets in here appear on the <em>Widget Bar for<\/em> all users on the Mac.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Your home folder \u2013 Library \u2013 Widgets<\/em>:\u00a0These widgets appear on your<em> Widget Bar<\/em> only, not those of other users.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In fact, widgets don\u2019t have to be located inside these folders. As with other applications, you can keep them anywhere that\u2019s convenient, and open them with a double-click. However, if you want them in your <em>Widget Bar<\/em>, you must use these folders.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"Widget_Syncing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Widget Syncing<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">If you have a MobileMe account, you can synchronize your widgets across various Macs registered to your account. This means that you don\u2019t have to download new widgets multiple times for them to be installed on all of your machines. To do this, open <em>System Preferences \u2013 MobileMe<\/em> on each machine, and then check the<em> Dashboard Widgets box<\/em> under the Sync tab.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"Get_More_Widgets\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Get More Widgets<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The widgets that come with OS X are useful, but they\u2019re only the tip of the iceberg. Indeed, you can find thousands of widgets available online to download. Most of these widgets are free, and if you\u2019d like to find a specific widget, chances are that a developer somewhere has already thought of it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The first place you should check for new widgets is the Apple site, as their collection is vast and well organized. You can go straight to this site from the\u00a0<em>More Widgets<\/em> option on the\u00a0Dashboard\u00a0bar. However, this is not the only source for widgets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Some widgets will automatically appear on your\u00a0<em>Widget Bar<\/em>\u00a0after you\u2019ve downloaded them. Others, however, may need to be moved to one of the two widget folders.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"Hidden_Features\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Hidden Features<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Many widgets have fun, extra features that aren\u2019t obvious at first glance. Here are two examples from the collection you already have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>The weather in Nowhere:<\/em> Open the weather widget, hold down the\u00a0<em>Command key + Option<\/em>\u00a0and click the widget a few times. You\u2019ll be taken to a mysterious city called <em>Nowhere<\/em>, and shown all the weather systems the widget can describe.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">If you\u2019ve played with the<em>\u00a0Tile Game<\/em>\u00a0widget but got bored of the default image, try putting yourself in the picture. Pick an image in\u00a0Finder\u00a0and, while dragging the file, tap F12, still holding down the mouse button. Keep dragging the image and drop it into the\u00a0<em>Tile Game<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"Roll_Your_Own_Widgets\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Roll Your Own Widgets<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Widgets can be easily created. The easiest way to create widgets is by using the\u00a0<em>Open<\/em> in Dashboard\u00a0button in <em>Safari<\/em>, which lets you grab a section of an existing Web page, and save it as a fully functioning and live-updating widget. In fact, widgets comprise little more than HTML code, JavaScript and images.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"Warning\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Warning<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Over time widgets can use large amounts of RAM, making your\u00a0Dashboard\u00a0and other apps run slower. Don\u2019t forget to close widgets you are not using. Sometimes, your computer will need to be restarted.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"Tips_about_Dashboard\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Tips about Dashboard<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To add the <em>Open<\/em> in Dashboard button to the Safari toolbar, choose Customize Toolbar from the <em>Safari View menu<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">If you want to make a widget available all the time, and not just when\u00a0Dashboard\u00a0is open, you can download and use DevMode widget. Once the DevMode widget is up and running, click F12 to reveal Dashboard. Next, click and drag the widget you want to keep active, tap F12, and you\u2019ll see a floating widget. To put it back on the Dashboard again, tap F12 while dragging it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Many Mac keyboards also feature a dedicated\u00a0Dashboard\u00a0key in the F4 position.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To teasingly slow the\u00a0Dashboard\u2019s\u00a0animated blitz across the screen, hold down\u00a0<em>Shift<\/em>\u00a0while you tap F12.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To close widgets without opening the\u00a0Widget Bar, hold the\u00a0Option key\u00a0as your mouse pointer hovers over the widget. This will reveal the widget closing button.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">If an individual widget becomes buggy or freezes, reload it with the keyboard shortcut,\u00a0<em>Command key + R<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">You can change the keyboard key and mouse button that reveals your\u00a0Dashboard\u00a0in the\u00a0<em>Expos\u00e9 &amp; Spaces<\/em>\u00a0pane of OS X\u2019s <em>System Preferences<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">If you always use the F12 key to access the\u00a0Dashboard, you have no need to keep its icon in the <em>Dock<\/em>. Click and hold it and choose Remove from\u00a0<em>Dock\u00a0<\/em>from the menu, if you ever want to put it back, drag the Dashboard icon from<em> Applications o<\/em>nto the<em> Dock<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"Konfabulator\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Konfabulator<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The whole idea of widgets dates back to <em>Konfabulator<\/em>, a third-party product available for both Macs and PCs. Now, it has become\u00a0<em>Yahoo! Widgets\u00a0<\/em>which offers thousands of widgets.
