If you choose another browser for your Mac, that browser will open when you click on things such as a link in an email. (Open\u00a0<em>Safari<\/em>, press<em>\u00a0Safari \u2013 Preferences<\/em>,\u00a0and go to the option in the <em>General<\/em> pane). There are pros and cons to each browser available on your Mac. Most of them open in the background and one in the foreground, or multiple pages may share the screen. In <em>Safari<\/em>, to open a link in a new window, right-click the link and choose\u00a0<em>Open Link in New Window<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">You can also open multiple pages within a single window, with \u201ctabs at the top to let you switch between them. Right-click a link and choose\u00a0<em>Open\u00a0in\u00a0New Tab<\/em>\u00a0to get started.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">You can also use keyboard shortcuts for new windows and tabs. To do so, open<em>\u00a0Safari-Preferences-Tabs<\/em>,\u00a0and use the three check boxes to toggle between the keyboard combinations. If you like tabbed browsing with new tabs appearing in the background (which is great for opening lots of links from one page), check the command key, which will open a link in a new tab box, and uncheck the\u00a0When a new tab or window opens, make it active box. With this configuration enabled, hold down the command key as you click links to open them as new tabs in the background. You can also hold both the<em>\u00a0Shift<\/em> key\u00a0and the<em>\u00a0Command<\/em> key\u00a0to open a new tab in the foreground.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In<em> Safari<\/em>, tabs can be reordered by dragging them to the left or right. To detach a tab to create a new window, hold down the <em>Option<\/em> key and drag it.<br \/>\nIf you visit a webpage frequently, you can drag its icon, which is located to the left of its address in your browser, to the right-hand section of the Dock for easy access.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"How_to_Retrace_Your_Steps\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>How to Retrace Your Steps<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">You can move back through the pages you have open, by using the back button. It may be quicker to click and hold on the back (or forward) button. This action allows you to choose the page you\u2019re looking for from a list of pages. With this technique, the menu will show you a certain number of pages that you\u2019ve viewed in the current window. To jump back to any page that you\u2019ve viewed recently, you can use the<em> History menu<\/em> list in <em>Safari<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"Bookmarks_Top_Sites\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Bookmarks &amp; Top Sites<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">You can use a bookmark when you want to save a webpage to come back to in the future. For this, you can use the\u00a0<em>Bookmarks\u00a0<\/em>menu. Alternatively, try the shortcut\u00a0<em>Command key + B<\/em>\u00a0if you are using\u00a0Safari. If you are using\u00a0Firefox\u00a0on your\u00a0Mac, use the shortcut<em>\u00a0Command key + D<\/em>. Try to get into the habit of using folders to group bookmarks together. Otherwise, you\u2019ll end up with a long and unorganized list. To create folders, or to delete unwanted bookmarks, choose the\u00a0<em>Show All\u2026\u00a0or\u00a0Manage\u2026\u00a0<\/em>option in the <em>Bookmarks<\/em> menu.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">When you use a webpage often, you can drop it onto the\u00a0<em>Bookmark Bar<\/em>. This bar is located below the back and forward buttons. If you can\u2019t see it, go to the View menu and look for options. You can drag page icons directly onto the bar, or save or move bookmarks into the\u00a0<em>Bookmark Bar<\/em>\u00a0folder. You can also create sub-folders within your\u00a0<em>Bookmarks Bar<\/em>\u00a0folder to generate dropdown menus of your favorite sites.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On the left-hand side of the\u00a0<em>Bookmarks<\/em> bar\u00a0in\u00a0<em>Safari<\/em>, there is a small grid-like icon. This icon launches a\u00a0<em>Top Sites<\/em>, which displays clickable previews of what\u00a0Safari\u00a0believes are your favorite sites.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">You can access your bookmarks via any device. There are also free online bookmarks managers, such as\u00a0del.icio.us, which positions itself as the social bookmarks manager, as users can view other\u2019s bookmarks. It\u2019s a great way to discover and promote many interesting sites. Another site is Xmarks.com, which makes your bookmarks available online and keeps them in sync across all your computers and browsers.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"Browser_Plug-ins\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Browser Plug-ins<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">All the browsers can be optimized with many downloadable extensions. These apps add extra functions and options to your browser (ad blocking is one of the most popular functionalities). There are scores of extensions available, and they&#8217;re usually free.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"Searching_the_Web\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Searching the Web<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">You can search Google directly from the toolbar, without having to go to Google\u2019s homepage o search for the items you need. When searching this way, all the regular Google tricks still work, including the shortcuts.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"Finding_Something_on_a_Page\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Finding Something on a Page<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To search for a word or phrase within a webpage, choose<em>\u00a0Edit \u2013 Find<\/em>. You can also use the shortcut <em>Command key + F<\/em>. Next, jump forward and back between occurrences of the same word or phrase by clicking\u00a0<em>Command key + G\u00a0<\/em>or<em>\u00a0Command key + Shift + G<\/em>, respectively.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"Privacy\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Privacy<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Anyone who can access your account can easily see all the sites you\u2019ve recently visited. If this bothers you, clearing your history isn\u2019t enough. Your cookies, cache, and auto-fill entries will also show everywhere you\u2019ve been. If you want to erase all of this, you can reset your\u00a0<em>Safari<\/em>\u00a0browser by clicking\u00a0<em>Safari \u2013 Reset Safari<\/em>. You can also choose<em>\u00a0Safari \u2013 Private Browsing<\/em>\u00a0to prevent\u00a0<em>Safari<\/em>\u00a0from recording any traces of your surfing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To block pop-ads, go to\u00a0<em>Safari \u2013 Block Pop Up Window<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To prevent banners from appearing on webpages you visit, you\u2019ll need to download an AdBlock extension, and banners should no longer appear in webpages you are looking at.<\/p>\n<p>To block the pop-ads, go to <em>Safari \u2013 Block Pop Up Window<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To prevent banners from appearing on webpages you visit, you&#8217;ll need to download an <em>AdBlock<\/em> extension, and banners should no longer appear in webpages you are looking at.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"Parental_Controls\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Parental Controls<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">If you want to limit your child\u2019s browsing to certain approved websites, create a user account for him or her and enable <em>Parental Controls<\/em>. You can try a special children\u2019s browser, such as <em>BumperCar<\/em>. <em>BumperCar<\/em> is a Mac OS X Web browser for kids which keep your kids safe while they surf the net. This browser makes browsing fun, and easy, as well as safe.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"RSS\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>RSS<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Really Simple Syndication<\/em>\u00a0(RSS for short) allows news services, blogs, and other websites to produce newsfeeds containing headlines and short descriptions of each new article or updated text, complete with links to the full story. When a person receives an RSS, they can scan a feed at a glance without having to visit the website. You can aggregate the feeds from your favorite sites, and thus create a totally personalized online magazine or newspaper.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">RSS tools are built into\u00a0<em>Safari<\/em>. When you visit a site, you can press the\u00a0RSS\u00a0button which appears on the Website, to view the feed. Occasionally,<em> Safari<\/em> fails to find a feed, in which case you\u2019ll need to find a link to the feed and click it (generally the link will be an orange button labelled XML).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">If you need to combine\u00a0RSS\u00a0feeds from various sites, you must bookmark each feed and add the bookmarks into a folder (or on your<em>\u00a0Bookmark Bar<\/em>). Click the folder and select\u00a0<em>View All RSS Articles<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">You can also view RSS feeds as a screen saver. To view RSS feeds in this way, open\u00a0<em>System Preferences \u2013 Desktop &amp; Screen Saver \u2013 Screen Saver<\/em>. Next, choose\u00a0RSS Visualizer and click\u00a0<em>Options<\/em>\u2026\u00a0to pick from your\u00a0Safari feeds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To browse your newsfeed collection from any computer, sign up with an online aggregator, which can be downloaded from a number of websites.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"A_Few_Other_Tips_About_Safari\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>A Few Other Tips About Safari<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">If you need to view a PDF in\u00a0Safari, single click on the page, and on-screen PDF controls will be displayed, which will make it possible to zoom, open the file in\u00a0<em>Preview<\/em>,\u00a0or download it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">You can click edit at the bottom of the\u00a0<em>Top Sites\u00a0<\/em>page to customize the selections. Click X to remove sites. Use the pin icon to add sites into a grid position permanently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">If any of the previews on your\u00a0Top Sites\u00a0page have a star in the top-right corner, this means that new content has been added since your last visit to the page.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">After browsing links and pages from a search, you can quickly return to the original set of search results by clicking the orange\u00a0<em>SnapBack<\/em>\u00a0point that appears in the Safari search field. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut\u00a0<em>Option key + Command key + S<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">If you want to type a search term, you can use the shortcut\u00a0<em>Command key + Option key + F<\/em>\u00a0to send your cursor straight to the toolbar search field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Right-click highlighted text on a webpage, and choose the option to search the Web for that term.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To resize any webpage text field, such as a search box, grab its bottom-right corner and drag.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">As an alternative to bookmarking, you can turn any part of a webpage into a widget to use in\u00a0<em>Dashboard<\/em>\u00a0by clicking the <em>Web Clip<\/em> button and dragging around the area you want to use. This provides quick access to a commonly used search field or online tool.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"A_Few_Tips_About_Firefox\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>A Few Tips About Firefox<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Firefox allows you to browse between pages without being connected to the Internet (obviously, if you have recently visited them). This is a great feature to use for reading while you are on a subway train, for example. It is possible to increase the number of offline pages you\u2019ll have access to by upping the cache size in\u00a0<em>Firefox Preferences<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">You can use the <em>Go<\/em> menu to jump back to any page that you\u2019ve viewed in the last week or more, as it will show you your browsing history.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To choose and add an extension, either choose\u00a0<em>Tools \u2013 Extensions\u00a0<\/em>and then click\u00a0<em>Get More Extensions<\/em>, or go to the<em> Mozilla Update page<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Right-click highlighted text on a webpage and choose the option to search the Web for that term.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To clear all history of your visits, go to\u00a0<em>Firefox \u2013 Preferences \u2013 Privacy<\/em>. To delete everything in one fell swoop, you can choose\u00a0<em>Tools \u2013 Clear Private Data<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To block\u00a0Pop-ups, open\u00a0<em>Firefox \u2013 Preferences \u2013 Content<\/em>.\u00a0Firefox\u00a0will warn you when a window is blocked.
