The cat protests of course, pouncing on my keyboard, usually, when I\u2019m finishing some urgent project. The person who laughs looks down on whatever he laughs at. So this person judges himself (or herself) as superior by some standard. As we can see, if this theory is right, all humor is derisive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Relief Theories:<\/em>\u00a0Humor often calls conventional social requirements into question. In this case, humor may be regarded as affording us relief from the restraint of conforming to those requirements. All of us have witnessed cases, when people who have been undergoing a strain burst into laughter if the strain is suddenly removed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In 1905, Sigmund Freud explained humor as a means of outwitting the <em>censor. <\/em>Freud used this term<em>\u00a0<\/em>for the internal inhibitions which prevent us from giving rein to many of our natural impulses (so called\u00a0<em>forbidden thoughts<\/em>). \u00a0The <em>censor<\/em>\u00a0allows us to indulge in these <em>forbidden thoughts<\/em> only if it is first beguiled or disarmed in some way. The beguiling is done, Freud says, by means of the techniques of humor. It is not only our sexual impulses that are repressed by the <em>censor<\/em>, but also our aggressive ones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Incongruity Theories:<\/em> Incongruity is often identified with <em>frustrated expectation<\/em>, a concept we owe to Immanuel Kant (1724-1804). According to Kant, humor arises &#8220;from the sudden transformation of a strained expectation into nothing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Defense mechanisms:<\/em> These mechanisms or coping styles are automatic psychological processes that protect the individual against anxiety and from the awareness of internal or external dangers. \u00a0The adepts of this theory consider that individuals are often unaware of these processes as they operate. Thus defense mechanisms mediate the individual&#8217;s reaction to emotional conflicts and to internal and external <em>stressors<\/em>. The individual defense mechanisms are divided conceptually and empirically into related groups that are referred to as <em>Defense Levels<\/em>. High adoptive level\u00a0of defensive functioning results in optimal adaptation in the handling of <em>stressors<\/em>. The defenses usually maximize gratification and allow the conscious awareness of ideas, feelings and their consequences. These defenses promote an optimum balance among conflicting motives. The individual deals with emotional conflict or external <em>stressors<\/em> by emphasizing the amusing or ironic aspects of the conflict or<em> stressor, <\/em>and humor helps us by replacing distressing emotions with pleasurable feelings.
