Social Media: How Internet Revolutionized the Communication
Social Media: Clearly, the Internet has revolutionized the way we communicate. Online dating Websites, social networking platforms and multiple role-playing games are a source of entertainment and networking opportunities. Interestingly, some researchers have turned to social media investigating why do people love socializing online.
Many networking Websites exist. Professional networking such as LinkedIn allows people to maintain social capital, a crucial variable in today’s job market. Indeed, an advice often given to unemployed persons is to talk with one’s contacts. A job opportunity may be just around the corner, especially when an individual knows many key people.
Social media comes in many shapes and forms. Facebook is by far the most popular, at least among university students. Studies have been done on the subject. For example, envy was an emotion often cited by those who use Facebook regularly. In fact, seeing countless pictures of an acquaintance constantly going on vacation and posting photos with many different friends in exotic, tropical locations may lead one to experience envy.
Interestingly, many authors suggest that social media has made people lonelier. For instance, socializing in person, while very important, has decreased in popularity since the advent of the possibility of communicating and interacting online. However, it is important to note that talking to people in person is a fundamental life skill.
Besides Facebook, other social media Websites include Twitter, Instagram, MySpace (which has decreased in popularity since the inception of Facebook), Pinterest, Google+ and numerous others. Another study on the subject focused on self-presentation and self-image on Facebook. While it is clear that Facebook users try to portray themselves in the best positive light, researchers have proved the view empirically. Many people invest a lot of time in Facebook, carefully crafting their online image.
But what about dating? The dating game has also changed over the years. Now, it is possible to register on a dating Website and interact with others, a likely fierce competition to matching agencies. But, there is a catch: people often lie on online profiles. So, the next time you see a profile that is too good to be true, remember the old saying “if it seems too good to be true, it probably is”.
