Google has just unveiled Personal Intelligence, a new service that uses all your data to make Gemini much more effective in its responses. It\u2019s a real nightmare for privacy protection.<\/p>\n

After a slow start, Gemini is now among the most capable AIs on the market. Today, Google is kicking things into high gear with Personal Intelligence, a service designed to harness your personal data to make Gemini\u2019s answers far more relevant.<\/p>\n

In practice, Gemini now draws on your Google data to get to know you \u2014 and therefore respond better. Whether it\u2019s your photos stored in Google Photos, your Gmail inbox, your search history, or your YouTube activity, the AI is poking its nose everywhere to please you. The promise is impressive \u2014 but, let\u2019s admit it, also concerning.<\/p>\n

Gemini becomes a made-to-measure AI<\/h2>\n

Try it yourself: ask Gemini to organize a trip for you without adding any details. The AI currently responds that it doesn\u2019t know where you\u2019ve traveled before, so it can only offer general suggestions. With Personal Intelligence, it now has all the background information it needs.<\/p>\n

Google gives an example: a user requests a trip to Chicago to discover new things. Gemini knows from your previous travel photos what you\u2019ve already done and can therefore suggest fresh experiences. Another example: \u201cWhich tires do you recommend for my car?\u201d Gemini analyzes your Photos and Gmail to figure out what model you drive and guides you accordingly.<\/p>\n

Even more, you can ask Gemini for a book recommendation \u2014 it knows exactly what you\u2019ve read or like. And if you tell it directly that you dislike golf, it will remember that for next time.<\/p>\n

Google clarifies, however, that users will be able to unlink certain apps. Don\u2019t want Gemini snooping in your photos? You can disconnect that feature. You\u2019ll also be able to delete your conversation history. Furthermore, Google says Gemini will always cite its sources \u2014 it will tell you whether a piece of information came from your emails or search history. Of course, the AI will only access this data with your explicit permission.<\/p>\n

At the moment, Personal Intelligence is available in beta only to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States. Needless to say, this feature is a real privacy nightmare. It\u2019s doubtful the European Union will allow Google to implement something like this within its jurisdiction \u2014 especially given that data protection and digital sovereignty are major issues for both users and governments in an increasingly tense world. Personal Intelligence may remain a distant feature for the Old Continent \u2014 and that may be for the best.<\/p>\n
