LifeCam HD-3000

LifeCam HD-3000 is the web camera designed and manufactured by Microsoft for Windows-based PCs and Skype certificated. It is an entry-level HD webcam on flexible mounting base with USB 2.0 interface and built-in microphone. LifeCam HD-3000 features 1280 x 720 maximum resolution, 16:9 ratio, digital 4x zoom and a LED indicator. The camera can record HD video and make snapshots.

The mounting base features a flexible but hard plastic ribbon that can be angled three times for better grip. The angle determines the grip, there’s no clip for this device, so one should be careful and not shake the desk or the display. LifeCam HD-3000 won’t tilt, the only tilt available is a digital one, the only free move is the horizontal one. The camera is attached to the base with a bearing and moves smoothly.

Drivers don’t come from the box, they’re to be detected automatically after the webcam is plugged in or downloaded from the Microsoft official site. LifeCam HD-3000 software, called Dashboard, has got a lot of video filters in a bundle plus digital tilt, zoom and live frames for fun. A user can tweak the resolution, the colors, the video frequency and the microphone sensitivity. There’s also an option to send the logs to the developers. Users can contribute to improving bugs and faults.

Miscellanea

  • TrueColor image processing technology provides superior color and brightness in all lighting conditions, low light and backlight included. TrueColor Technology sets the correct brightness balance so that the user’s face won’t be overexposed or underexposed. In a bright morning and in a dusk you’ll look as natural as possible without your face turning purple blue or crimson, or grey. This is achieved through a precisely designed combination of software and firmware.
  • LifeCam HD-3000 can be plugged not only to PC, but also Windows tablets with OTG and TV-sets with USB 2.0 socket.
  • CMOS sensor is the cheapest sensor of all and as such it has its own very peculiar features. The sensor in question captures the image row by row, each row at a different moment of time and this leads to some comical video effects. For example, the objects, especially the moving ones, can be wobbled or skewed, or distorted in some other way. As most video chatters are sitting still, it may not be a great problem, but LifeCam HD-3000 is not the best choice for a surveillance system.
  • Windows 10 doesn’t recognize the webcam from the box, though the Data Sheet lists the OS as a compatible one. A user has to download newer drivers from the official site or update Windows 10. In the fall of 2015 LifeCam HD-3000 driver is the part of the OS again.
  • The Windows Live Call button works only with Windows Live Messenger. The volume slider may not appear in the Dashboard under Windows XP and Vista.

Troubleshooting

If the LifeCam is not detected by your system, do the following:

  • Disconnect and reconnect the LifeCam.
  • Disconnect other unused USB devices.
  • Use a different USB port on the computer. If you can, connect to a USB 2.0 port.
  • If you are using a USB hub, unplug the LifeCam from the hub and plug it directly into your computer.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Uninstall, and then reinstall the LifeCam software.

If the LifeCam is reported to be used by some other application, do the following:

  • Close the LifeCam software and any other program that may be using your LifeCam. (You cannot run the LifeCam software and make a video call with your instant messenger program at the same time since they both require complete, unshared access to your LifeCam webcam.)
  • Start the video call again from your instant messaging program.
  • If you have some problems with your video \ audio, e.g. you can’t hear \ see your contact, or your contact can’t hear \ see you, do the following:
  • Check the connection of the LifeCam. Make sure the LifeCam is properly plugged into the USB port.
  • Make sure you have the latest drivers or the latest Windows 10 Update installed.
  • Make sure your sound is not muted and check the volume.
  • Make sure your Internet connection is fast enough to support video calls.
  • Choose the lower resolution in the Dashboard.

  • Thank you for doing them all in sync, really helps those, like myself, to get a grasp as to what they think is best for them (others just want to discuss it and not show the quality itself). The LifeCam is a nice addition to Microsoft devices and, thank you for putting that in too.
