The Apple Watch can communicate wordlessly using sounds and haptics. Sounds are audio alerts, whereas haptics are vibration alerts targeted at your wrist and arm. It is possible to configure the alert volume, adjust the haptic strength, and turn Prominent Haptic on or off, either from the Apple Watch itself, or by using the Apple Watch app on your iPhone..

How to Configure Sounds and Haptics on the Apple Watch

  • Raise your wrist to wake your Apple Watch and display the watch face.
  • Click the Digital Crown to display the Home screen.
  • Tap Settings to display the Settings screen.
  • Tap Sounds & Haptics to display the Sound & Haptics screen.
  • When the Ringer and Alert Sounds are displayed, turn the Digital Crown clockwise. You’ll see a green border appear around the volume control.
  • Turn the Digital Crown clockwise to increase the volume. Turn the Digital Crown counterclockwise to decrease the volume.
  • You can tap Quieter or Louder to change the volume.
  • You can set the Mute switch to On to mute sound.
  • Tap and drag up the screen. The Ringer and Alert Haptics will appear.
  • Tap Weaker or Stronger to adjust the vibration.
  • Set the Prominent Haptic switch to On if you want the Apple Watch to play a prominent haptic – one with an extra tap – to bring your attention to some common alerts.

How to Configure Sounds and Haptics Using the iPhone

  • Press the Home screen to display the Home screen.
  • Tap Apple Watch to open the Apple Watch.
  • Tap My Watch. The My Watch screen will appear.
  • On the My Watch screen, tap Sounds & Haptics to display the Sound & Haptics screen.
  • Drag the Alert Volume slider toward the Quiet or Loud end.
  • Set the Mute switch to On if you need to mute the Apple Watch.
  • Drag the Haptic Strength slider toward the Weaker or Stronger end.
  • Set the Cover to Mute switch to On to use Cover to Mute (When the Apple Watch notifies you to an alert, place your palm over the Apple Watch display for about 3 seconds, until you feel a tap to confirm the muting.
  • Set the Prominent Haptic switch to On if you want the Apple Watch to play a prominent haptic for common alerts..

Set the Volume

To turn the volume up or down do the following:

  • Open Settings and scroll down.
  • Tap Sounds & Haptics.
  • Tap decrease or increase.

You can also tap the slider, then turn the Digital Crown. Note that it is possible to change the volume of an alert, but it is impossible to change how it sounds.

Change the Strength of Taps

Make sure that you have the latest version of watchOS. To decrease or increase the intensity of taps do the following:

  • Put on your Apple Watch and unlock it. Keep in mind that for the best haptic results, the back of the watch needs skin contact. To allow the watch make good contact, use a snug, but comfortable fit.
  • Press the Digital Crown to see your apps.
  • Tap the Settings app.
  • Scroll down.
  • Tap Sounds & Haptics.
  • Under Haptic Strength, tap Decrease if you want to decrease haptic intensity. Otherwise tap Increase.

Sounds & Haptics Screen: You can adjust haptic alerts using your paired iPhone. Open the Apple Watch app, tap the My Watch tab, then tap Sounds & Haptics. Under Haptic Strength, drag the slider to adjust the intensity of haptic notifications.

Warning: If you’re wearing your Apple Watch and you don’t feel a tap as you adjust the slider, contact Apple Support.

Add an Extra Tap

To add extra emphasis to haptic alerts, you can turn on the Prominent Haptic feature. The Prominent Haptic will send you an additional haptic tap that pre-announces some of your other haptic alerts. You can turn on Prominent Haptic from your iPhone or your Apple Watch. To do so:

  • Open the Apple Watch app from your iPhone.
  • Next tap the My Watch tab.
  • Then tap Sounds & Haptics.
  • Turn on Prominent Haptic.
  • Open Settings from your Apple Watch.
  • Once in Settings, tap Sounds & Haptics on the Apple Watch face.
  • Now turn on Prominent Haptic.

How to Mute Apple Watch

You can mute your Apple Watch from Settings or Control Center, for this:

  • Open Settings on your watch.
  • Tap Sounds & Haptics.
  • Turn on Silent Mode.
  • Now go to the watch face and swipe up to open Control Center.
  • In Control Center, tap the Silent Mode icon.

To silence an alert or notification as it sounds, rest your palm on the display for at least three seconds or until you feel a tap. If the procedure doesn’t work, see if the Cover to Mute setting is on. For this, on your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, go to the My Watch tab and tap Sounds & Haptics.

How to Turn on Do Not Disturb Mode

Warning: Do Not Disturb mode doesn’t turn off the alarms.

To keep calls and alerts from sounding or lighting up the screen follow these steps:

  • Turn on Do Not Disturb. When Do Not Disturb is on, the do not disturb icon or purple moon appears at the top of the screen.
  • Swipe up on the watch face to open the Control Center
  • Tap the purple moon/do not disturb icon.

Alternatively, you can open Settings, tap Do Not Disturb, then turn on the setting.

Change the Settings from Your iPhone

To change the settings from your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone, go to the My Watch tab, and tap Sounds & Haptics.
