The Apple Mac Pro Quad Core 2.66 was the first Intel-based tower Mac to have been introduced. It served as a long awaited replacement for the PowerPC-based Power Mac G5 machines. This configuration is powered by two 2.66 GHz dual core Intel Xeon 5150 processors with 4 MB of shared level 2 cache per processor.

Miscellanea
- Apple introduced its Apple Mac Pro as a fully customizable quad-core computer. The buyer could choose from two dual-core Intel Xeon Woodcrest at 2.0, 2.66, or 3.0 GHz. As little as 1 GB of RAM or as much as 16 GB. 160, 250, or 500 GB in drive bay one, and optionally 500 GB in bays 2-4. The Apple Mac Pro “Quad Core” 2.66 was by default configured with 1.0 GB of 667 MHz DDR2 ECC “fully-buffered” FB-DIMM memory, the headsink design of which differs from the generic one of FB-DIMMs.
- In this model, for graphics, Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT is the default. You can add one, two, or three more. Or choose an ATI Radeon X1900 XT or Nvidia’s top-end Quadro FX 4500.
- The expansion is provided with two external 5.25” bays, four internal 3.5” cable-free, direct attach hard drive bays, four PCle slots.
- Intel-based Macs use a partitioning scheme known as GPT. Only Macintel models can boot from GPT hard drives. Both PowerPC and Intel Macs can boot from APM, which is Apple’s old partitioning scheme hard drives and which is the format the user must use to create a universal boot drive in Leopard. Power PC Macs running any version of the Mac OS prior to 10.4.2 cannot mount GPT volumes. PowerPC Macs will not let the user install OS X to a USB drive or choose it as your startup volume.
- If one SuperDrive was not enough, the user could put in a second one for US$100 more. It was possible to upgrade from Apple’s regular wired keyboard and Mighty Mouse to the wireless (Bluetooth) version.
- This Mac Pro has room for six internal drives: two optical drives and four hard disk drives. In most configurations, a single hard disk drive occupies the first hard drive bay and an optical drive is located in the top optical drive bay. The user can add up to three additional Serial ATA (SATA) 3 Gbit/s hard disk drives to the empty hard drive bays. The drives must meet these specifications: Type: SATA 3 Gbit/s; Width: 3.9 inches (102 mm); Depth: 5.7 inches (147 mm); Height: 1.0 inch.
- The user can expand the capabilities of your Mac Pro by installing cards in the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Express slots. Your Mac Pro has one double-wide PCI Express graphics slot and three PCI Express expansion slots, for a total of four slots. These slots accommodate PCI Express graphics cards and expansion cards.
- This Mac Pro can accommodate up to four internal 1-inch-high SATA 3 Gbit/s hard disk drives in the hard drive bays. If the Mac Pro comes with a single drive installed, it’s in the first bay. The user can install drives in the second, third, and fourth hard drive bays. To install a hard disk drive: 1) Open your Mac Pro and remove the side panel 2) Lift the latch to unlock the hard drive carriers (important note: When the latch is down, the carriers are locked in the drive bays and can’t be removed.) 3) Pull the hard drive carrier out of the drive bay. 4) Use the four screws on the carrier to attach the hard disk drive to the carrier. 5) Lift the latch and then slide the carrier over the guides and into the drive bay, until it’s seated in the bay and snaps into place. 6) Replace the side panel and push the latch down to secure it.
- For easy access, a headphone jack, two USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 400 port, and a FireWire 800 port are located on the front of the Mac Pro.
- The CPU could be replaced by a faster, more powerful version.
