The Apple September Event 2019 Was a Disappointment

The Apple September Event 2019 that took place in the Steve Jobs Theater on September 10th, was the most unusual one yet, in my experience. I can’t put my finger on it, but the whole thing looked like it lacked its signature vivacious vibe. Tim Cook looked more animated when announcing the TV show featuring Jason Momoa than when unveiling the iPhone 11.

This can also mean that Apple is shifting its focus to the streaming services. Of Course, they threw in one free year of Apple TV+ for everyone who buy a Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV starting now. Apple TV+ will launch on November 1st with 5 original shows and there will be more coming this way every month. The subscription fee is $4.99 per month, so if you aren’t going to upgrade your Apple devices, you won’t really pay too much for the streaming.

You will shell out another five bucks for Apple Arcade though. This gaming streaming service includes Family Sharing access with up to six members in your family. The app is available in the Arcade tab of the App Store on iOS 13 and offers a one-month free trial. Well, now I see why Apple introduced ScreenTime a year ago. You’ll certainly need this after September 19, which is the day the new service starts.

Now Apple will make billions of dollars selling services.

Despite everything else, the new iPad 7th generation (2019) was a pleasant surprise. When it didn’t arrive this March, everyone thought Apple postponed it for the next year, but the company recruited the cheapest of its products to promote the iPadOS. The iPad 7th generation (2019) features Apple’s Smart Connector to hook up a full scale keyboard, and also includes Apple Pencil support. The slightly larger 10.2-inch display lands the tablet next to the 10.5-inch iPad Air 3. All of these hardware upgrades have to enrich the iPadOS 13 experience. The new OS brings iPads closer to ultrabooks with detachable screens, like Microsoft Surface but unusually enough, the Apple tablets come cheaper. The iPad 7th generation (2019) will start at $329 and the price for educational institutions is even lower – $299. The two year old A10 Fusion chip probably has something to do with this. In fact, Apple just installed a larger matrix and a keyboard connector, adding nothing innovative to the tablet.

The Apple Watch Series 5 looks more promising. Apple failed to add a blood pressure monitor but made up for it by adding a menstrual cycle monitor and an emergency call option (for cellular models). This last option will be available worldwide, regardless of the place of initial purchase. However, the highlight of the Series 5 is the always-on display, controlled by your wrist moves. When the wrist is down, the display dims automatically. In this regime you can see just the time, but you can return to full brightness by raising your hand or tapping the display. To achieve this Apple had to rehaul both the display architecture and the watchOS software with the focus on power management and light emission control.

The Apple Watch Series 5 are available for preorder now but keep in mind that first orders arrive on September 20th. The prices ranges from $399 for an aluminum model to $1400 for the ceramic Apple Watch Edition. There are also models from stainless steel and all-new titanium.

I will have to say though, that I am disappointed with the iPhone 11! Apple rolled out three models as expected. The iPhone 11 replaces the iPhone XR, while the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max replace the iPhone XS and iPhone XS. All three run the A13 Bionic chip with dedicated GPU and Neural machine for machine learning. I’d say 8.5 billion of transistors could have been used more rationally than just video shooting and taking pictures. No under screen fingerprint scanner, no 5G modem aboard. Instead, all three iPhones were touted like state-of-the-art digital cameras! We didn’t even given a glimpse of the new interface features, if there are any at all. I will also spare you about the design details because honestly, they are just awful. The iPhone’s 11 back panel does not look like it was made by apple, but instead as if a Chinese off-brand created the phone.

However, if the cameras are what you usually appreciate most in your iPhones, the new models are a blessing.

The iPhone 11 is rigged with wide and ultra-wide lenses, allowing you to adjust cropping and zooming in post production. A new night mode comes on automatically, brightens photos, and reduces noise in low-light scenes. The pictures look a bit oversaturated to my liking, but tastes differ, I suppose.

Video is 4K quality at 60 fps, with slo-mo, time-lapse, and expanded dynamic range. What I really like is the new video recording feature nicknamed QuickTake. All you have to do is long-press the camera shutter button.

The iPhone 11 selfie camera has been upgraded up to 12 MP with wide-angle selfie support in landscape. It is also has the capability of taking 4K video at 60 fps, and slow-mo.

The battery life is one hour longer than that of the iPhone XR. The iPhone 11 comes in six colors: red (but not PRODUCT(RED), yellow, mint green, purple, black and white. The lowest price for a 64GB model is $699. You can order the iPhone 11 starting Friday, September 13th but it will arrive a week later on September 20th.

The iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max are the successors to the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. They come in more somber colors: midnight green, space gray, but there are also models in silver and gold. These colors, however, don’t help much. When you see the triple camera arrangement on the back you will feel like crying. The iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max are the ugliest iPhones ever!

Good thing, they still have something inside to pay one thousand dollars for! The iPhone 11 Pro line features a triple-camera that includes a telephoto lens, a wide angle lens, and a super wide angle lens. You can find the new super wide angle lens in the Camera app as a 0.5x button. All you have to do to use this lens and zoom out. The The ultra-wide lens has an f/2.4 aperture with a 120-degree field of view. Naturally, the A13 Bionic Neural Engine is here to fuse the data from all three lenses and hone the details. This technology is called ‘Deep Fusion’ and combines up to nine images.

The video is also 4K 60 fps with extended dynamic range. On the downside of it, be prepared to pay for extended cloud storage, because the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro lines start with 64GB of unextendable storage. For the cheapest of the Pro models you’ll have to pay $999, while the entry-level iPhone 11 Pro Max starts at $1,099.

Well, Apple devices never come cheap, don’t they? Tell us in the comments, what do you plan on purchasing?
