Samsung is reportedly set to finally launch an affordable foldable smartphone in 2024. Other brands may follow suit.
While the launch of Samsung’s first foldable smartphone was a flop, it has successfully popularized this type of device in 2023. Indeed, the manufacturer’s Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip are selling well, and this segment of the smartphone market is experiencing double-digit growth. However, for now, foldable smartphones are still too expensive.
But in 2024, the situation could change. According to a publication by Trendforce, Samsung is preparing to launch an affordable foldable smartphone (a mid-range model) next year. “Sources from the supply chain also revealed that Samsung plans to introduce foldable phones to the mid-range market next year, further reducing price barriers and making foldable phones more accessible to a wider range of consumers,” the publication stated.
Furthermore, Samsung is not the only manufacturer planning to launch affordable foldable smartphones. According to Trendforce, Huawei is considering doing the same. Other manufacturers could then follow suit, accelerating the sales of foldable smartphones worldwide. Of course, for now, this information should be taken with caution. However, Samsung had already expressed a desire to make foldable smartphones more accessible. This was confirmed by Drew Blackard, Vice President of Mobile Product Marketing at Samsung, in an interview with Tom’s Guide in August. However, he did not provide any details.
It is also worth remembering that rumors about Samsung’s future affordable foldable smartphone have been circulating for a while. For example, in 2022, a Korean media outlet mentioned the development of more affordable versions of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold, with a starting price of 800 dollars in the United States. Additionally, there are rumors about “FE” or “Fan Edition” versions of Samsung’s foldable smartphones.
It should also be noted that while foldable smartphones are currently only available on the Android ecosystem, Apple is also interested in this format. The Cupertino company has never publicly discussed foldable screens. However, behind the scenes, it is reportedly working on an iPad with a foldable screen that could be unveiled in 2024.
Foldable smartphones are already selling very well, but their prices remain very high
To make foldable smartphones more accessible, Samsung could launch an affordable version in 2024.
Huawei is rumored to have a similar project, and the entire smartphone industry could end up offering more accessible models with a foldable screen As for Apple, it might also launch an iPad with a foldable screen.
