Samsung is set to introduce a new version of its Bixby assistant, enhanced with generative artificial intelligence. The Korean giant is developing its own alternative to ChatGPT.
Since the beginning of the year, Samsung has heavily relied on AI to sell its smartphones. The Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, and Galaxy S24 Ultra feature a significant new addition called Galaxy AI, which integrates numerous generative AI-based features. These functionalities have also been added to older models like the Galaxy S23. Naturally, Galaxy AI is also available on the new foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6, which Samsung recently unveiled in Paris.
However, Samsung is already working on another major evolution for its smartphones: a new assistant based on large language models, the type of AI that powers chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini. Similar to many digital giants, Samsung is developing its own large language model, already used internally. According to CNBC, Samsung’s mobile division head, TM Roh, recently announced that the company will release a new version of Bixby powered by generative AI this year.
Currently, there are no technical details or information on compatible models. However, this improved version of Bixby, which is already integrated into Samsung smartphones, should enable more natural interactions and handle more complex requests. By developing this advanced version of Bixby, Samsung ensures it stays competitive. In June, Apple introduced Apple Intelligence, featuring an upgraded Siri assistant. Meanwhile, Google appears to be gradually replacing Google Assistant with its Gemini chatbot on Android smartphones.
Apple made a strong impression with the presentation of Apple Intelligence at its WWDC conference in June. Unfortunately, Apple’s AI innovations will only be compatible with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, likely due to insufficient RAM in other iPhone models. This unintentional limitation is expected to boost iPhone sales as users upgrade to models compatible with Apple Intelligence.
Samsung, on the other hand, aims to make Galaxy AI compatible with as many devices as possible. After launching its AI features on the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung also rolled out Galaxy AI (with some reduced features) on older high-end models. During its July 10 event, Samsung committed to deploying Galaxy AI on over 200 million devices by the end of the year.
