The iPhone 6S Plus: An Oldie But Goodie

HONE 6S PLUS In 2019! (Still Worth It?) [Video]

The iPhone 6S Plus: An Oldie But Goodie

Recently, I cracked the screen of my iPhone 6S Plus, so I headed to a local Apple store to inquire about a repair. As luck would have it, I was due for an upgrade – yay!! So the technician excitedly revealed my smorgasbord of new options: an iPhone X, 11, and onward. I’ll admit Apple’s new lineup is eye-popping, absolutely mind-boggling. I’ve seen those parents at choir concerts who manage to capture crystal-clear images of their cherubic offspring dressed in black in a dark auditorium using the latest phones. My photos look angelic too, but there’s no denying some of them have slight halos and look less than pixel-perfect.

So the technician gently poses the question: “Which model would you like?” My answer: “Could you get me another 6S Plus?” He gazes at me like I’m a UFO that I just landed in a spaceship.

Call me sentimental, but there’s NOTHING like the 6S Plus! You may think I’m one of the last holdouts, but, you’d be amazed to know I’m in good company.

So what’s so great about the iPhone 6S Plus anyway?

Screen/Cameras: It’s a phablet with a roomy screen display, nearly identical in size to the iPhone 8 or X, with a sharp resolution. It has great rear cameras!

Back: The 6S Plus has a durable aluminum back, in awesome colors like gold and rose gold. Phones starting with iPhone 8 have glass backs that shatter more easily, while the 6S Plus can take a beating.

Features: The 6S Plus has a headphone jack, which was discontinued starting with iPhone 7: many dinosaurs like me find this annoying; we miss the jack because we prefer to use wired headphones. The phone has Touch ID rather than Face ID, which some users find to be quirky and not yet perfected. It charges just as fast as an iPhone 8 or X out of the box. Best of all, it runs the same iOS as the newest models!

Price: Although Apple no longer sells the 6S Plus (including refurbished phones), you can find a brand new, unlocked 6S Plus 128GB for about $250-$350 on Amazon or eBay, and a pre-owned phone for $150-$250 on those sites or at BestBuy! Compare this to the iPhone XR starting at $749, and the X and later models starting at around $1,000! If you have a 6S Plus and want to upgrade, you can get an iPhone 8 and still pay much less than the 2019 models, so you’re ahead of the game.

So what are you really getting for the higher price tag on the latest models?

  • Water resistance.
  • Better-quality cameras and screens.
  • Nifty new features like portrait mode and augmented reality apps.
  • Wireless charging (which requires a separate charger).
  • Ultra-fast charging (which requires a USB power adapter with Power Delivery standard and an Apple USB-C-to-Lightning Power Cable).

It’s up to you to decide if this is worth it to you. As for me, I’ll stick to my 6S Plus as long as it’s humanly possible, thank you very much!
