What Can We Say About the Apple Watch Ultra (Apple Watch Ultra after 10 months)

The Apple Watch Ultra is Apple’s latest innovation in smartwatches, tailor-made for outdoor and sporting activities. This watch is encased in a 49mm titanium shell, fortified by a sapphire crystal that offers exceptional resistance to impact and scratches. It boasts a dual-frequency precision GPS, a depth meter for diving, a customizable activity button, an emergency siren, and a display larger and brighter than any other Apple model. It promises up to 36 hours of battery life on normal usage and can extend to 60 hours when used on low power mode. It comes equipped with three specific bands: the Sport Loop, Adventure Band, and Dive Band.

How does the Apple Watch Ultra hold up under stress? We have conducted a 10-months long rigorous examination.

Our journey with the “ultimate sports watch,” designed to withstand harsh environments, elevations, and temperatures, had it facing everything from hot tubs to engine bays.

The only true way to evaluate the robustness of the Apple Watch Ultra is to subject it to a long-term stress test.

The only true way to evaluate the robustness of the Apple Watch Ultra is to subject it to a long-term stress test.

So, what about an examination that spans over ten months? This was precisely the test we put the Apple Watch Ultra through, and it hardly left wrist since the day it was unpacked.

During this time, it braved everything from snow and rain to caves and mines, even joining me on engine checks and through muddy terrains. It shared both adventurous swims in saltwater and relaxing times in hot tubs. Suffice it to say, the watch has been through a lot.

Having previously been tough on Apple Watches, we made sure this was a thorough test.

While we’ve collected a few personal scratches over the months, how did the Apple Watch Ultra fare?

Many have been curious about this smartwatch’s endurance. Judging from the photo, it’s holding up remarkably well. Excluding the epoxy resin stain on the band, it appears almost brand new.

However, the examiner went a step further and examined the watch under my Andonstar AD407 Pro digital microscope for a closer inspection.

Starting with the titanium case, purported by Apple to masterfully balance weight, durability, and corrosion resistance.

Under the microscope, the bezel reveals minor scratches, a couple of which are visible without magnification (we’ve highlighted these with an arrow). The remaining case appears almost immaculate.

The titanium employed in crafting the Apple Watch Ultra has proven to be impressively durable.

The hook on the band’s underside, frequently subject to knocks and scratches, is in remarkable shape

However, the remainder of the band appears slightly worn.

But what about the part everyone’s most eager to know about – the sapphire crystal? How did the display stand against nine months of rigorous use?

Upon careful examination of the crystal’s surface, we found only one minuscule scratch.

Upon careful examination of the crystal’s surface, we found only one minuscule scratch. And here it is with the screen on. This flaw is barely noticeable to the naked eye and imperceptible to touch. We’re inclined to think it’s less of a scratch in the sapphire and more of damage to the coating.

So, the final verdict on the Apple Watch Ultra’s performance? We’d say it’s performed extraordinarily well. We’re taken aback by the minimal damage on the case. The titanium does a remarkable job of warding off scratches, and the lack of deep gouges speaks to its strength.

As for the sapphire crystal, I’ve owned sapphire crystal watches before, and I expected it to resist all but the most deliberate attempts to damage it. It’s gratifying to see it meet my expectations.

If you’re considering the Apple Watch Ultra, you can rest easy knowing it’s as resilient as a watch can get. If you’re waiting for the next release, you can expect it to be just as robust.
