Apple’s Event on September 7, 2022: All You Ever Wanted to Know

On Apple Event has finally unveiled the next-gen iPhones along with Apple Watch Series 8 including the Apple Watch Ultra and Apple Watch SE 2, and the second generation AirPods Pro. Broadcast from Apple Park, the company’s corporate headquarters in Cupertino, California, this was the first in-person event since 2019 and Apple pulled out all the big guns and dubbed this year’s event “Far Out,” with hints of space, the stars, and infinite possibilities. The gadgets unveiled at the event are now available in pre-order and we expect Apple to ship the orders sometime later this month.

iPhone 14

All eyes were on Apple as they took the covers off their best selling product, the iPhone. Apple introduced the iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Plus, the iPhone 14 Pro, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The base iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus now come in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch Retina display. The screen of the Plus is similar to that of the Pro models and will also offer longer battery life. The two phones now come equipped with the A15 Bionic chip. The dual camera setup of both phones includes a primary 12MP shooter with a bigger sensor and faster aperture for better low-light performance. The image processing now is aided by a Photonic Engine feature for better photos. The front-facing camera has TrueDepth feature and the video recording now offers improved stabilization for smoother footage.

Available in a 6.1-inch display and a new, larger 6.7-inch size, iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus feature impressive camera upgrades and groundbreaking new safety capabilities.

One of the most talked about features at the event is the inclusion of the Crash Detection feature. Crash detection will be available on the iPhone 14. During a crash, iPhone 14 can offer emergency SOS service powered by satellite. There are new antennas and a supporting app that helps you stay connected as the satellite moves. This service will launch in November and will be free for 2 years. As expected, Apple has ditched physical SIM cards in favor of eSim in the US. The eSIM lets you change a wireless carrier, data, or service plan through software rather than having to swap a physical SIM card. Apple has been dabbling with the technology over the last few years iPhones dating back to iPhone XS, XS Max and XR as well as cellular-enabled iPads and Apple Watches have supported eSIMs alongside physical SIMs. Even the last year’s iPhone 13 allowed for multiple eSIMs to be enabled at once. Apple said that major carriers including T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T, will provide resources to assist with eSIM-related questions, service upgrades, and changes. Prices for both phones will start at $799 and $899 respectively and are likely to hit the stores in early October.

iPhone 14 Pro

The premium iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max get the new A16 bionic chip for a start. The much-requested always-on display feature is included which dims the wallpaper for a lockscreen with all the relevant information readily available. Both the phones do not have the display notch anymore from last year and it has been replaced by a useful and versatile Dynamic Island that houses the True Depth camera. The Dynamic Island will also be home to notifications and other relevant information. The “Dynamic Island” will change its size and layout depending on the tasks and apps you run.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max represent the biggest leap ever for iPhone, featuring the Dynamic Island, the first-ever 48MP camera on iPhone, the Always-On display, and groundbreaking safety capabilities.

Apple has completely overhauled the camera system for the two premium iPhone 14 models. There is a huge 48-megapixel camera with a quad-pixel sensor that captures 4x more information than ever before and the A16 bionic chip works in tandem to perfect every pixel captured. It can also combine 4 pixels into one for even more detailed images. The camera system also features a new Action mode that offers gimbal-like stabilization. It offers 4k resolution video and 24 frames-per-second recording. Photogenic Engine feature is also included that will improve the low-light performance of all four cameras. Prices for the iPhone 14 Pro start at $999, while the Pro Max start at $1099. Both the phones are available for pre-order on September 9 and is expected to ship later this month. There are four color options for the iPhone 14 Pro models; space black, silver, gold, and deep purple.

Apple Watch Series 8

The Apple Watch Series 8 was also unveiled at the event with significant hardware updates. The most notable improvement is a temperature sensor for advanced women’s health tracking to get ovulation estimation among other things and wellness tracking. The watch also has a low-power mode to extend its battery life to 36 hours between charges. Crash detection feature is also included in the Series 8 Apple Watches. It uses sophisticated motion sensors and algorithms to detect a car crash and can alert emergency services, keeping your safety first at all times. The two watches come in 41 and 45 mm sizes with aluminum steel cases in an array of different colors including midnight, silver, starlight, and Red. The stainless steel versions will come in gold, graphite, and silver. Prices start at $399 for GPS models and $499 for cellular ones.

Introducing Apple Watch Ultra, the most rugged and capable Apple Watch.

Another gadget that garnered more attention at the event is the Apple Watch Ultra. The “rugged” watch designed for adventurers and athletes has a larger case, battery, and superior water resistance than the other Apple watches while retaining all the health and fitness-tracking tools. The Ultra has a rugged, lightweight 49-millimeter titanium case and a flat sapphire crystal making it the biggest Apple Watch ever made. It is also worth noting that this is the first Apple Watch to have a customizable button (on its left side) and a crown guard. A new Action button is included for quick physical control and the watch can be operated even while wearing gloves. The watch also has an improved mic, built-in cellular, a huge battery that can last up to 36 hours that can be extended up to 60 hours in low-power mode. Apple has upgraded the watch’s GPS for better location tracking and safety by including an integrated siren. Crash detection is also available and when a crash is detected, the watch automatically alerts the emergency services. Available only in titanium casing, there is also a new watch face called Wayfinder with extra readings for outdoor activities. Apple has also introduced three new watch bands for the Apple Watch Ultra with each band serving a specific purpose. For running and endurance activities, there is a flexible and lightweight Trail Loop. There is an Alpine Loop with a woven band attached to an adjustable top loop via G-hook for secure stay for hikers and mountaineers. There is an Ocean Loop for extreme aquatic activities and recreational diving which is flexible and has an extended tail to fit over wetsuits. The Apple Watch Ultra is now available to order for $799 and they will be shipped later this month.

Apple Watch SE 2

Apple has also launched the followup to the more economical Apple Watch SE. The second generation Apple Watch SE features a bigger, faster, and improved pairing. It also has a new snappier look with a reworked aluminum housing with a composite back case. The budget watch is powered by the same chip as the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra. It also shares the crash detection features from the Series 8 watch and much of its features like water resistance, optical heart rate sensor, etc.

The new Apple Watch SE comes in midnight, starlight, and silver, and now features a redesigned matching back case made of a nylon composite material.

The SE 2 comes in two sizes as before – 40mm or 44mm and all three watches are run on WatchOS9. Prices for the Apple Watch SE 2 (40mm, GPS) start at $249 and Apple Watch SE 2 (40mm, GPS + Cellular) at $299 while the bigger Apple Watch SE 2 (44mm, GPS) costs $299 and Apple Watch SE 2 (44mm, GPS + Cellular) costs $329. Apple has also introduced three new colors for the SE 2 – Midnight, Starlight and Silver.

AirPods Pro 2

Apple also unveiled the second generation of AirPods Pro. Apple say this is the most advanced AirPods ever made powered by the new H2 chip. AirPods Pro 2 has major upgrades to Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode. Spatial Audio can be personalized and users with True Depth camera on any iPhone can enjoy the personalized listening experience tuned to fit their profile best. A new Adaptive Transparency Mode improves the listening experience and the new AirPods Pro can better fade out sounds like a passing vehicle siren, construction tools, loud speakers, etc.

The new AirPods Pro bring major upgrades to Transparency mode, Spatial Audio, and customer-loved convenience features, while cancelling up to twice as much noise over their predecessor.

Other new features include instant pairing with Apple devices, stem-controls for Siri, and extended battery life, which Apple promises will last 30 hours on the new AirPods Pro on a full charge with Active Noise Cancellation turned on. The new charging case comes with a lightning port, but now can also be charged by an AppleWatch charger, a MagSafe charger or a Qi-certified charging mat in addition to the Lightning cable. The charging case also is sweat and water resistant and comes with a built-in speaker to let it be located when misplaced. The AirPods Pro 2 is available for order and the company will likely ship them by the end of this month.
