Since the iPhone made its dramatic debut in 2007, I’ve been a diehard Apple fangirl. Yes, I was one of those lunatics lined up for miles outside the Apple store the day a new model arrived. In those days, you could get an iPhone for $499 that made you the envy of the neighborhood. An iPhone was an iconic status symbol, a sign that you “made it.”
Fast-forward to 2019. The price of iPhones has more or less doubled, yet people living near the poverty line own them. Alas, I came upon two prospective phones for under $1,000: The Samsung Galaxy s10e and the iPhone XR, two worthy opponents. I made my choice, brought it home, and felt vaguely guilty. What, dare you ask, was my offense? I, who had worshipped at the throne of Apple for over a decade, was now the proud possessor of a Galaxy s10e, an ANDROID! What was the catalyst behind my act of betrayal?
Display/Color: The iPhone XR had its customary LCD (albeit with a Liquid Retina display) with 326 ppi, but the Galaxy s10e boasted a sharper-resolution OLED display with 438 ppi, reminiscent of the $1,000 iPhone XS. There’s nothing like a good OLED if you want eye-popping colors that are a stark contrast to deep black. Plus, the Galaxy s10e is more compact than the iPhone XR (5.8-inch vs. 6.1-inch screen) and has a more streamlined bezel.
Camera: The iPhone XR has a 12-megapixel wide-angle single rear camera, with Portrait Mode, Portrait Lighting, and Smart HDR, which all deliver more detailed photos. But the Galaxy s10e has a 16-megapixel ultra-wide camera offering a 123-degree field of view for large scenes (one of the widest lenses in the industry), as well as a second rear camera similar to the iPhone XR. The Galaxy s10e’s camera system, with its Neural Processing Unit with AI technology, has professional-grade settings that automatically optimize the photo environment.
Storage: The iPhone XR base model is 64GB, with the top model having 256GB. All models have 3GB of RAM. In contrast, the Galaxy s10e’s base model has 128GB with 6GB of RAM, while the top model has 256GB with 8GB of RAM. And the Galaxy s10e features a MicroSD slot that enables up to 512GB of extra storage!
Processor: While the iPhone XR’s six-core A12 Bionic processor has been judged superior to the Galaxy s10e’s eight-core Snapdragon 855, the Galaxy s10e is currently the only smartphone that supports Wi-Fi 6, the latest standard for greater speed in high-density areas.
Battery Life & Charging: Although both phones charge wirelessly with a Qi charging pad and claim to provide all-day battery life, the Galaxy s10e has an added bonus: You can charge ANY brand of Qi device by placing it on the back of the Galaxy s10e. It’s magic!
Price: The base model of both phones costs $749, but the Galaxy s10e has twice as much storage! As for the higher-end models of each (with 256GB), the iPhone XR is $899.99 and the Galaxy s10e is $848.99.
I never thought I’d see the day I’d break my loyalty and forsake my beloved Apple. Until now.
