Forget the Old ChatGPT – OpenAI launches “Dots”: A New AI That Works 24/7, Almost Like a Real Person
OpenAI packed its DevDay conference with announcements. Among them are Dots: a new form of AI that works 24/7, both autonomously and proactively.
OpenAI unleashed a slew of updates tonight during DevDay. In addition to introducing the new GPT-6.1 Sol model, the company also announced “Dots”—a new form of artificial intelligence set to radically transform how we work. Dots are personal AIs with a unique identity for each user, automatically adapting to individual preferences and goals. A Dot runs applications on its own cloud computer 24/7, but can also take control of the user’s computer. If this new product gains mainstream adoption, OpenAI clients should end up spending less time on ChatGPT while accomplishing significantly more.
This new agent is accessible directly within ChatGPT (via message or voice call) as well as on messaging platforms like Slack and Teams. Compared to traditional AI tools, OpenAI’s Dots are more autonomous and far more proactive. A Dot can initiate an action independently and then ask for user validation. In essence, it represents a completely new way of working alongside AI. At OpenAI, for instance, when a bug is reported, Dots automatically investigates the issue. When a new design is created, Dots takes charge of building the corresponding application.

The company also noted an example where an external tester forgot to send an invoice—Dots automatically prepared it and sent it out once the user gave the green light. The creator of ChatGPT explains that because a Dot understands its user’s overarching goals and requirements, it can act without needing step-by-step instructions for every part of a task. When direction changes on a project, you no longer need to repeat yourself.
OpenAI envisions a world where people collaborate with multiple Dots at once
For now, Dots is only available to individual users on the ChatGPT Pro subscription. As is often the case, the new offering is not yet available in the European Economic Area. Regardless, OpenAI is already anticipating a future where a single person collaborates with several Dots simultaneously.
Furthermore, ChatGPT’s creator announced a preview of specialized Enterprise Dots that act like domain experts. “Your company configures each ‘dot’ by giving it its own identity, credentials, and system access needed to complete its tasks. As it gets used, the ‘dot’ adapts to new information and improves through team feedback,” OpenAI explained.

A new model and a new workspace tool in ChatGPT
Dots are powered by the new GPT-6.1 Sol AI model, which OpenAI also just launched. According to OpenAI, its main advantage is delivering nearly the same intelligence level as GPT-6 Astra (ChatGPT’s most powerful AI to date), but at one-fifth the cost. This new model is available across ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu subscriptions.
