Samsung Galaxy Note 9: the Flagship Fablet Arrives This Week

The official launch date for Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is August 9, yet the invite was sent out more than a month ago on June 27. The event will take place in Brooklyn, New York at 11am EST (8am PST, 4pm BST).

The next big Android phablet arrives ahead of the schedule. Usually Samsung lands the unveiling event at the end of August. Some experts assume, the low sales of Samsung Galaxy S9 triggered the early start. Samsung Galaxy Note 9 128GB and 512GB are already available for pre-order in Indonesia. The Korean company is obviously trying to launch the product as early as possible before Apple’s new iPhones hit the stores. They even published the framework of the support pages for the device with the model ID of SM-N960F/DS. This is the expected ID of the phablet in Northern Europe, Scandinavia, and France.

The prices, though, are going to give you a shock of a lifetime. Since we mentioned Indonesia above, let’s start with the Indonesian prices. They soar at 13,500,000 Rupiahs for a 128GB model and 17,500,000 Rupiahs for a 512GB version. That’s about $934 and $1211 per phone.

Why is Samsung asking so much money for these phones?

First of all, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is expected to be faster than the iPhone X with the mysterious Exynos 9820 chipset aboard.

The 7nm chip has been under development since the beginning of this year and recently surfaced in a breathtaking benchmark. It is unlikely though, that the Exynos 9820 will land in the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. The Korean company will probably save it for the anniversary S10 model.

The RAM capacity hasn’t been detailed yet but it will be less than 4GB, taking into account the multicore chip and the digital assistant aboard. Other sources claim that the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is coming with 6GB of RAM for the 128GB model and 8GB of RAM for the 512GB model. This smartphone is basically more powerful than a low-budget laptop. I wonder, if it can support the Samsung DeX, the desktop dock for mobiles to turn them into an office working station.

The 5G connectivity hasn’t been confirmed either. Right now the 5G network is being deployed in some areas in Asia but not in Europe or the US.

The most likely new features of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 are a big curved screen, an S Pen support, a dedicated Bixby 2.0 button, a larger battery, and an HDR video recording which is now a must-have for many Asian top brands like Sony and LG.

The in-screen fingerprint scanner, the next Saint Grail of the mobile industry, will most likely not appear this August. In all probability, Samsung will save it for the premium Galaxy S lineup. Besides, engineers have had some difficulties implementing the technology into the Super AMOLED screens.

Samsung will allegedly roll out the yellow S Pen for their Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and S9. The render of the smartphone and its stylus leaked from the notorious Evan Bass who has been bombarding Twitter with Samsung leaks for a while. Speaking of colors, there are three color options, if we trust the leaks. The choices are Mystic Black, Artisan Copper, and Engineered Blue. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 also features the S Pen silo like the Galaxy S9 models.

The picture also shows that even though the front design remains, the dual camera and the fingerprint sensor are re-positioned. Now the lenses are situated horizontally and the sensor is below them. The ports include a USB-C charging/connecting port, a microphone, a speaker grille, and a 3.5mm headphone port – all on the bottom edge. This means that Samsung Galaxy Note 9 can’t feature good dust and water protection, since the headphone port is the gate for any liquid and dust. On the bright side, users won’t have to overpay for wireless headphones or a USB-C – 3.5 jack connector. There are numerous rumors about the headphones port, but I don’t think any of them are accurate. It’s a legacy port now especially for the flagship models.

As for the dimensions, the Galaxy Note 9 is allegedly measuring 161.9 x 76.3 x 8.8mm (other sources say 162 x 76.4 x 8.8mm). This year’s model is going to be shorter but wider and thicker than the 162.5 x 74.8 x 8.6mm Galaxy Note 8. The screen will stay at 6.3 inches though. The thicker case with the same screen size proves that there will be a larger battery, because more powerful batteries are usually also thicker.
Insiders are claiming that the battery capacity will be at 4,000mAh or at least 3,850 mAh. The back panel will have to be made of glass or ceramic then to dissipate the extra heat.

As you see, you pay for the hardware, not for the design. In the long run the design doesn’t matter even a bit. Design wise all modern smartphones are basically the same. Hardware wise, the quick cool chip, the big capacity of storage and RAM are critical for the device to run smoothly, especially smooth when several ‘heavy’ apps are running simultaneously. And that… that is what you are paying for.
