Apple to Introduce New Smartwatches in 2022 with Interesting Features

Smartwatches have been recording huge sales number over the recent years. A Pew Research Report from 2020 alleges that one in five Americans use a smartwatch or fitness tracker, while Counterpoint Research’s data says the smartwatch industry grew by 24% year-over-year in 2021. And in 2022 the numbers are even higher.

Brands like Apple, Google, Samsung and Fitbit have launched an updated smartwatch every year since their inception. The best smartwatches do more than let you know if you are getting a call or text message on your wrist. They are everything for everyone – a fitness tracker, a digital wallet, and can substitute for your phone if your phone is nowhere nearby. Smartwatches nowadays have many health features that can even save your life. Some of them can detect elevated heart rate and automatically connect you to emergency services in case of an emergency. Some companies offer electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood oxygen (SpO2) readings on their watches; the former detects signs of atrial fibrillation and the latter is an indicator of respiratory health. We expect this year to be no exception. Apple, Samsung, Google, FitBit are all working on their next-gen smartwatches slated to launch this year and recent developments suggest the market is not going to slow down anytime soon.

Apple, Samsung, Google, FitBit are all working on their next-gen smartwatches slated to launch this year and recent developments suggest the market is not going to slow down anytime soon.

Apple reportedly has plans to introduce three new watch models in 2022. There is the new Apple Watch Series 8, which we believe will introduce a body temperature sensor; then second is a new pocket-friendly Apple Watch SE model, and finally a new rugged “Explorer Edition” of the Apple Watch model which just might be the most exciting new launch since the beginning of the series. The Apple Watch Series 7 was released in October of last year and we expect the Series 8 to hit the shelves around the same time. Even with the Apple Watch Series 7, there was a speculation that the watch design will go through a major overhaul, but to our surprise it did not happen. Apple did face production delays due and industry insiders suggest that might be the reason for the delay, but the Series 8 is expected to feature flat sides and squared edges. The eighth generation of the Apple Watch could have temperature management capabilities which would allow users to check their own body temperature. There are also reports that Apple is working on blood pressure monitoring, advance sleep tracking, and a blood glucose monitor for the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch Series 8 is expected to feature a faster chip that will bring performance improvements. The company is also working on a crash detection feature for their iPhone and the Apple Watch. It will use sensors like the accelerometer to detect car accidents when they occur by measuring a spike in gravitational force. When a crash is detected, the iPhone or the Apple Watch can automatically dial emergency services for help.

Apple will also launch a new version of the low-cost Apple Watch SE. There is very little information available about the Apple Watch SE, but Apple has plans to upgrade its mid-range watch as the current version was launched back in 2020. The current Apple SE watch shares most features from the Series 7, but misses out on thinner bezels, a full QWERTY keyboard, and an always-on Retina display function. The Series 7 Watch also has ECG and blood oxygen sensor features which Apple may include in its upcoming second update of the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch SE could essentially serve as a replacement for the Series 6, the last in the series before Apple increased the display dimensions with the Apple Watch Series 7.

The Series 7 Watch has ECG and blood oxygen sensor features which Apple may include in its upcoming second update of the Apple Watch.

Apple is working on a version of the Apple Watch “with a rugged casing” dubbed the “Explorer Edition” aimed at athletes, hikers, and others who use the watch in more extreme conditions than day to day wear. This rugged watch will share its features and functionality from a standard Apple Watch, but with improved impact resistance and protection. Apple is expected to launch the rugged Apple Watch in 2022. The new watch is s expected to feature a brand new look with impact shock resistance and a protective design, possibly similar to a Casio G-Shock.

Samsung could also be introducing some amazing new features for its Galaxy Watch 5. They only introduced the Exynos W920 chip in the Series 4 of their smartwatches and we expect them to retain it in the upcoming iteration as well. The existing Galaxy Watch 4 is the best smartwatch you can buy if you are an Android user and the company has loftier plans for the Galaxy Watch 5. The series 5 watch is expected to be available in two variants – a 40 mm and a 44 mm. The models will feature a 1.2-inch and 1.4-inch Super AMOLED display, respectively. There are reports that Samsung is working to offer a higher battery capacity; the 40 mm might have a 276 mAh battery, up from 247 mAh and the larger 44 mm will have a 397 mAh battery, up from 361 mAh. Google’s Wear OS will power the Galaxy Watch 5 and Samsung’s One UI skin will be running on top of Wear OS. The new watch will reportedly retain the existing health and fitness features from Series 4 such as the ECG sensor and blood oxygen monitoring. The Bio-Electrical Impedance Analysis sensor introduced last year may also be retained and there are unconfirmed reports that the Galaxy Watch 5 will have a temperature sensor to detect early signs of infection as well as tracking ovulation cycles in women. The Series 5 watch is expected to launch sometime in August 2022.

The Google Pixel Watch could finally be on the way in 2022.

The Google Pixel Watch could finally be on the way in 2022. Google owns Fitbit and makes software for Android smartwatches (Wear OS) and now merging Wear OS with Tizen last year, the company seems poised to release hardware to match. Earlier leaks suggest that watch would feature a circular display with a bezel-less design that seems to curve around the edges. It will feature a circular knob on the right that could help you navigate through the UI and scroll through long lists. There is not much information available on the hardware front, but one source alleges that the watch will use a 5nm chipset similar to the one the current Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 uses. The watch is also expected to support on-device processing for Google Assistant, which could speed the service up, continuous heart-rate monitoring via Google Fit, contactless payments with Google Pay plus a Google Play smartwatch store. The Pixel Watch is expected to share many features with FitBit and Google sent out a survey asking people about features users would like to see in Wear OS. The responses included features like SPO2 (oxygenation) tracking, sleep apnea detection, sleep analysis, heartbeat alerts, recovery time monitoring, stress tracking, pairing for medical devices and gym equipment, rep detection, and calorie tracking. While we do not expect the watch to have all these features, it is plausible that Google will incorporate many of these features to their first ever wearable device. The watch is expected to be available in three variants and will have customizable bands.

There is no official word from Google as to the release date or price of the watch, but we expect the watch to launch sometime in October of this year.
