New Regulations Imposed by the European Union Introduce New Rules for Apple

With its series of regulations, including the DSA, the DMA, and the obligation to use the USB-C port, the European Union is imposing major changes in the tech world. And this is especially true for Apple, a fan of closed systems, which has to make significant modifications on its iPhone, both on the hardware and software level. In this article, we offer you a little overview of the major changes that the EU imposes on the Cupertino firm.

The abandonment of Lightning

Apple has always distinguished itself from the competition, regarding the port to charge its iPhone. For example, while all Android smartphone manufacturers have been using USB technology for years, Apple has always insisted on keeping its Lightning port on the iPhone, instead of using industry standards.

On the iPhone 15 series launched in September, the firm finally gave in, replacing the Lightning with a USB-C port.

But on the iPhone 15 series launched in September, the firm finally gave in, replacing the Lightning with a USB-C port. Now, you can charge your iPhone with a cable that came with an Android smartphone, or vice versa.

And this change was imposed on the Cupertino firm by the EU. The rule imposing USB-C as the universal charging port for portable electronic devices was published in the Official Journal of the EU in December.

The iPhone opens up to RCS

Recently, Apple announced that it will adopt the RCS technology in 2024. This will allow iPhones and Android devices to send text messages, without going through the old SMS. Compared to SMS, RCS are more secure, and they also allow you to enjoy a modern messaging experience.

Apple has long opposed the idea of integrating the RCS standard on its iPhone. But it seems that the firm finally gave in to comply with the digital markets legislation or DMA.

Apple has long opposed the idea of integrating the RCS standard on its iPhone. But it seems that the firm finally gave in to comply with the digital markets legislation or DMA. Currently, the European Commission is investigating whether this legislation should apply to iMessage. But Apple, for its part, did not wait for the results of this investigation to announce the change.

Payments and app distribution

The DMA should also impose significant changes on iOS, regarding app distribution and payments. Although the firm has not yet made a public announcement on the subject, it is expected that it will finally allow the installation of applications that are not on the App Store. On the other hand, it is expected that Apple will end its lockout of payments on the iPhone.

In other words, we will have a less closed Apple ecosystem in 2024, at least in Europe. Moreover, the firm expects that the changes imposed by the DMA will affect its revenues.

Besides, the European Union is imposing major transformations on the Apple ecosystem: as we have just said, the Cupertino firm has already abandoned its proprietary Lightning port to comply with the new requirements of the European Union which have been applied by the DMA, but the firm will also support the RCS technology, already used by Android, on iMessage. In addition, this law will end the lockouts of app distribution and payments on the iPhone.
