A New Apple iPhone 16 Model Will Be Larger Or Not?

Recent leaks of iPhone 16 case models suggest larger dimensions for the Pro and Pro Max versions.

The expectation that the iPhone 16 lineup will introduce significant changes to screen sizes seems to be confirmed by newly leaked case prototypes. These prototypes provide a glimpse into the potential size adjustments that have been rumored.

Bloggers have noted that images of the new iPhone 16 prototype cases feature all four anticipated models of the iPhone 16 series—the standard iPhone 16, the iPhone 16 Plus, the iPhone 16 Pro, and the top-tier iPhone 16 Pro Max—arranged next to each other in order of their market positioning.

From the images, it’s evident that the iPhone 16 Pro Max is poised to be the largest in the series, boasting a 6.9-inch screen, an increase from the previous 6.7 inches. The iPhone 16 Pro is also expected to see a size increase, going from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches. The sizes of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are predicted to stay the same at 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively, aligning with prior speculations about these models.

The iPhone 16 Pro Max is notably massive.

In addition to screen sizes, the prototype cases seem to support the speculation that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will feature vertically aligned cameras, as opposed to the diagonal arrangement found on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

One possible reason for Apple’s return to a design reminiscent of the iPhone 12 could be to accommodate spatial video capabilities: the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max can record spatial video—3D-like footage compatible with the Apple Vision Pro headset—while the standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus cannot. It’s theorized that the vertical alignment of the cameras on the Pro models enables simultaneous shooting from two different angles, a feature not possible with the diagonal setup on the standard models.

It’s theorized that the vertical alignment of the cameras on the Pro models enables simultaneous shooting from two different angles, a feature not possible with the diagonal setup on the standard models.

By incorporating vertical camera alignment on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, Apple may be aiming to make spatial video accessible to more users, potentially boosting sales of the Apple Vision Pro headset. Alternatively, Apple might simply prefer the aesthetic of the iPhone 12’s camera layout. Nonetheless, there’s hope that the spatial video feature will indeed be part of the new design.

Regarding the camera setups on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, they are anticipated to remain the same. However, the larger screens on these models are expected to facilitate enhancements to the ultrawide camera on both the Pro and Pro Max, as well as an improved optical zoom range on the Pro Max.

It’s important to remember that while case prototypes are utilized by accessory manufacturers to design fitting cases, they are not always entirely accurate. Therefore, it’s advisable to consider the rumors about the iPhone 16 with some skepticism. That said, the consistency of these prototypes with other leaks lends a degree of confidence to our expectations for the iPhone 16 series.
