Apple is expected to release new models of the iPad Air, iPad Pro, and MacBook Air, all equipped with the latest Apple M3 chip, in early 2024.
This prediction comes from Bloomberg’s chief correspondent Mark Gurman, a reliable source for Apple insights. He anticipates a “spring launch” (between March and May) to rejuvenate iPad sales, which have recently seen a downturn. The lineup is rumored to include a new 12.9-inch iPad Air, updated Magic Keyboard versions, and a fresh Apple Pencil design.
The decision to bypass the M2 chip for the iPad Air and go straight to the M3 chip seems a practical choice. The 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models currently feature the M2 chip, but upgrading to the M3 chip would help maintain their status as the most powerful iPads.
A notable aspect of the upcoming iPad Pros is the potential shift to OLED displays, possibly extending the 12.9-inch model to a full 13 inches. While there have been ongoing rumors about OLED iPads, sources familiar with Apple’s unreleased products suggest a spring 2024 release. Such an upgrade, particularly to OLED, would likely benefit professional photo editors and artists with enhanced contrast and color quality.
Gurman also hints at new Magic Keyboards with a sturdier aluminum frame, giving the iPad Pro a more laptop-like appearance. Details about the new Apple Pencil, however, remain unspecified.
If these upgrades materialize, they could position iPads as viable laptop replacements for almost all tasks, especially considering Apple’s recent advancements in gaming capabilities on its iPhone 15 Pro models. An iPad Air with a 12.9-inch display would cater to those desiring a larger screen without needing the advanced features of the iPad Pro, assuming it’s priced competitively.
On the MacBook Air front, transitioning to M3 chips is logical. The original M2 MacBook Air will be nearly two years old by spring 2024, indicating a timely update. Even the 15-inch MacBook Air, released this year, would benefit from the enhanced performance and efficiency of an M3 chip by 2024. This move targets users with older M1-based MacBooks who may not have upgraded to M2 models.
While “spring launch” is somewhat broad, Gurman predicts that the iPads and accessories are likely to debut in March. The updated MacBook Air models are also expected around the same time, aligning with Apple’s history of revealing new products in early spring. However, as always, time will ultimately reveal the exact launch details.
