OpenAI recently released a new ChatGPT app for MacOS, part of a series of major updates. This guide will show you how to use the app and provide information on when Windows users can expect their version.
OpenAI has unveiled a new ChatGPT app for MacOS, with a Windows version coming later this year. This announcement was made alongside other significant updates, including the introduction of the GPT-4o model for free users and a new voice mode for Plus users, featuring an improved voice interaction capability.
While many ChatGPT updates will take a few weeks to roll out, the MacOS desktop app is available now for Plus subscribers. OpenAI plans to make it accessible to all users in the coming months. The app boasts a fast, user-friendly interface, distinguished by its simplicity. One standout feature is the ability to access it anytime using a keyboard shortcut.
When using the ChatGPT desktop app, pressing Option + Space Bar brings up a text bar where you can enter a prompt, regardless of the app you’re currently using.

Download the ChatGPT App: The MacOS ChatGPT app is currently available for Plus subscribers, with plans to expand access. It is not listed in the Mac App Store; instead, log in to the ChatGPT website. If you have a Plus subscription, a pop-up will prompt you to download the app.
Install the App: After downloading, install the ChatGPT app by dragging it into your Applications folder.
Log In: Open the installed app and log in with your ChatGPT Plus credentials.
Use the Shortcut: Once logged in, use the Option + Space Bar shortcut to access the AI chatbot from any application.
This shortcut feature is incredibly useful, allowing quick access to ChatGPT for tasks like finding synonyms or defining terms, similar to Mac’s Spotlight search shortcut (Command + Space Bar).
Availability for Windows:
A ChatGPT desktop app for Windows will be released later this year, following the pattern of the mobile app rollout, which launched on iOS before Android.
Functionality Comparison:
The ChatGPT desktop app offers the same capabilities as the web version, with an easy switch between GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and GPT-4o. The sidebar is not visible by default but can be accessed by clicking the sidebar icon. The app supports file and image uploads, voice conversations, and AI-generated images.
New Voice Mode:
The new Voice Mode will be available soon. It will initially be rolled out in an alpha version to Plus users, with plans to eventually make it available to all users.
The ChatGPT desktop app for MacOS is available now for Plus subscribers, offering a convenient and user-friendly experience. With features like the Option + Space Bar shortcut and full functionality similar to the web version, it’s a valuable tool for Mac users. The Windows version is expected later this year, expanding accessibility to more users.
