After Apple, Amazon, and Google hardware released new products over the past month, it is now Microsoft’s to host its launch event where the company launched their new products: Surface Laptop 5, Surface Pro 9, and the Surface Studio 2+ with new and improved processors. Microsoft also unveiled some new work-from-home accessories as well as a brand-new Microsoft 365 app. All the products launched at the event are currently available on pre-order basis starting today with the products likely to hit shelves on later this month.
The new Surface Laptop 5 visually looks very much similar to the last year’s model and comes in 13.5-inch and 15-inch variants powered by Intel’s 12th Gen Alder Lake CPUs as usual. The smaller Surface Laptop 5 is available in a new Sage color and in Sandstone and both sizes also come in Platinum and Matte Black. Microsoft has retained its ports and you get a USB-A port, a 3.5-mm headphone jack, a Surface Connect Port, and a USB-C port. Microsoft has included support for Thunderbolt 4 which would mean you can connect a 4K monitor and transfer large files at faster speeds. Both 13- and 15-inch modles as mentioned come with a 12th-generation Intel processor, but you have the option of an i5 or i7 for the 13 inch model and the bigger 15-inch model only comes with the more powerful i7 processor. There is no separate line-up powered by AMD processors this time. Both models are available in 8GB, 16GB or 32GB RAM and up to 1TB of storage configurations. Battery-wise, Microsoft claims the 13.5-inch variant lasts up to 18 hours due to the smaller display whereas the 15-inch is claimed to last up to 17 hours. The Surface Laptop 5 starts at $1,000.
The product that got much attention at the event was the new Surface Pro 9 which is now available in either Intel or ARM-based Microsoft SQ3 chips. The ARM version offers 5G connectivity in select areas and Microsoft’s Qualcomm-powered SQ 3 chip. The Intel versions will come with 12th Gen Alder Lake CPUs. The Microsoft SQ3 is based on the Snapdragon 8cx Gen3. The new Surface Pro 9 has retained much of the features that were launched last year like a bigger and brighter display, better low-light capabilities on the cameras, Thunderbolt 4 ports, and support for the Slim Pen 2 (complete with a detachable keyboard that stores and charges it). Design-wise, the new Surface Pro looks roughly the same as its predecessor, but the new one is 0.37 inches thinner and just under 2 pounds heavy. Microsoft believes with all these features combined with 5G connectivity, this new laptop could be a game changer for the company. The Wi-Fi variants offer 8GB, 16GB and 32GB RAM options whereas the 5G variant is available only in either 8GB or 32GB RAM configurations. The Qualcomm version comes with a 512GB SSD and the Wi-Fi version comes with a 1TB SSD. Microsoft claims the battery on the Intel version lasts up to 15.5 hours, but the Qualcomm version lasts up to 19 hours. The Intel-powered Surface Pro 9 comes with two USB-C ports with support for Thunderbolt 4 whereas the Qualcomm version does not support Thunderbolt 4 connectivity and has a SIM port. There is a special 10th anniversary edition Surface Pro 9 designed in partnership with Liberty and features a laser-engraved floral pattern with a matching Type Cover. The new Surface Pro 9 is available on pre-order now with prices starting from $999.
Microsoft has finally updated the Surface Studio after a wait of four years with a new version. The Surface Studio 2+, the all-in-one PC has almost the same design as the original Surface Studio from way back in 2016, but on the inside it is a different story. The Surface Studio 2+ now features an Intel 11th-gen Core i7-11370H, and NVIDIA RTX 3060 Laptop GPU which aims to offer double the performance over the older Surface Studio 2 that was powered by an outdated 7th-generation chip. It has a 28-inch 4K+ (4,500 x 3,000 resolution) touchscreen and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 laptop GPU. Other welcome improvements to include the addition of three Thunderbolt 4-enabled USB-C ports on the back and the removal of the SD card reader. The device now can offer external display support for up to three 4K UHD monitors with up to a 60-Hz refresh rate which is impressive. Microsoft bundles a Surface Pen, Surface Keyboard, and Surface Mouse alone with the Studio 2+. It comes with comes with 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage which is the only configuration available. The Surface Studio 2+ is also available for preorder at $4,499.
Apart from the laptops, Microsoft also introduced other accessories like the Microsoft Audio Dock, Microsoft Presenter +, and adaptive accessories. The new Microsoft Audio Dock is a premium quality audio speaker, good for music listening and Teams conferencing. It includes a fully featured docking experience on the back side that allows you to connect a PC up to monitors and other peripherals. There is a HDMI 2.0 port, two USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 ports, and one USB-A 3.2 port. It feature a 15-watt woofer and two 5-watt tweeters that offers multi-dimensional music experience and deep bass. The Audio Dock is priced at $250. Alongside the Audio Dock, Microsoft also unveiled Presenter+ designed for anyone whose workdays consist of presentations in Microsoft Teams. This uses to Bluetooth to connect and during video calls you can use it to mute and unmute yourself and join meeting rooms. The Presenter+ can also be used to sift through slides and point towards specific content with the screen pointer. It also includes a separate Teams button that allows you to raise or lower your hand. Microsoft claims a single charge is good enough for six days of usage. The Presenter+ is priced at $80.
There were also some software unveils at the event. Microsoft introduced new creator features within Microsoft 365, Microsoft Edge, and Bing. There is a new Designer app included In Microsoft 365 for creating graphics, invitations, digital postcards, and more. This is powered by DALL-E 2 from OpenAI and will create images and designs for you which saves time. Microsoft says this tool will also be integrated into Microsoft Edge, so you can also use it within a browser window. For video making, a new video editing software is introduced called the Clipchamp—. This is available in Windows 11 and via browser.
