The iPad mini 5 surprised the 7.9-inch tablet fans this spring. The previous model arrived back in 2015, and for a while Apple seemed to drop the lineup completely. However, the tide changed and the company rolled out a revamped iPad mini.
Apple reserved the signature design of its smallest slate but peppered it up with some inner tweaks and upgrades.
The size is similar to the previous models in every detail. The iPad mini 5 (2019) is 203mm long, 135mm wide and 6.1mm thick. A Wi-Fi model weighs 300g, while a cellular one is eight grams heavier -308g. It also has thick bezels around the screen and a Touch ID fingerprint scanner. This iPad is going to make you feel like you’re back in 2015.
The two stereo speakers are placed at the bottom edge of the tablet, where you can also find a lightning cable connector for data transfer and charging. Like I said, some things don’t change and the iPad mini 5 escaped the USB-C craze. Volume buttons and a SIM-tray are on the right hand edge. Overall, the iPad mini 5 is basically a vintage iPad, just in disguise.
Eager to boost iPad sales, Apple generously included some premium features into this iPad. The iPad mini 5 features a 7.9-inch Retina Display with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 (326 pixels per inch). It’s a True Tone display with a gamut of colors that will allow the human eye to view it in its most natural tones, with the brightness being 500 nits.
The most amazing fact about the screen is that it supports the Apple Pencil like the full sized iPads. Unfortunately it is only compatible with the original Apple Pencil not the 2nd generation one with wireless charging. I did already mention that it has the same iPad mini design, which means no magnetic strip. It’s ust something we will have to get used to.
Apple installed an A12 Bionic chip inside to spice it up a bit. It’s the same chip with Neural Engine, that the company touted when it presented the iPhone X series. The benchmark that appeared online yesterday shows that the tablet performance can be compared to that of the iPhone XS.
Unfortunately, the benchmark did not specify if it was the iPad mini 5 or the new iPad Air.
The Cupertino company did not share other specs like the RAM or battery capacity. The official website promises about 10 hours battery life, but if the body is the same size, how can the battery possibly be larger? The only detail they revealed is the storage, because it determines the price. The smallest of all iPads is not going to be the cheapest one.
The iPad Mini 5 (2019) starts at $399 for a 64GB Wi-Fi-only version. The most expensive one will have 256GB of storage plus cellular connection, and will cost a whopping $679. The tablet will also be available in three colors: Silver, Space Gray and Gold.
This iPad will work fine for web-surfing, communication, reading papers and magazines in Apple’s new streaming service and, perhaps, for making notes and sketching. It’s small, light and can easily fit in a backpack. If you’re looking for a compact tablet that can run iOS 12 and 13, the new iPad mini would be your best choice.
