Samsung unveiled its folding phones back in August to much fanfare, but only days later Xiaomi launched its next foldable phone, the Mix Fold 2 that is tipped to take on the Samsung’s foldable phone.
This new phone is a significant improved over the Mix Fold 1 launched last year. The latest Fold 2 runs on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 flagship chipset with 12GB of RAM and a range of storage options from 256GB to 1TB. Design wise, the new phone has an improved hinge mechanism. When folded, the Mix Fold 2 has a 6.56-inch OLED outer display with a long 21:9 aspect ratio, but unfolded it becomes an 8.02-inch LTPO 2.0 inner display. It is also worth noting that the screens are bigger than Samsung’s 6.2-inch OLED outer display and 7.6-inch OLED inner display on the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The Xiaomi foldable is also incredibly thin at 5.4mm unfolded and 11.2mm folded. The crisp OLED display has a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz with the display crease at the folding point is nicely blended in unlike the deep grooves found in Samsung’s foldable phone.
This smartphone has four cameras: a 20MP front-facing camera in a hole-punch design at the top of the secondary display, and a triple-lens main camera setup comprising of a 50MP, f/1.8 main (wide) camera, a 13MP, f/2.4 ultra-wide camera, and an 8MP 2X telephoto zoom lens with an f/2.6 aperture. The glaring omission is that there no selfie camera in the inside main screen. Despite the sleek design, Xiaomi has managed to cram a 4,500 mAh battery inside and with the included 67W charger the phone can be charged 0-100% in around 45 minutes.
The Mix Fold 2 runs a customized version of the Xiaomi’s MIUI, named MIUI Fold on top of Android 12. The MIUI Fold is well designed with multi-tasking in mind to take advantage of the large screen. This allows quick ways to launch apps in small floating window mode without having to toggle endlessly between apps.
As mentioned, the phone made its debut in China back in August with prices starting at $1300 (8,999 RMB) for the base model. The device is expected to be launched in the US, UK, and Europe sometime in October to rival Samsung’s Fold 4.
