Apple Unveils New 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air Models Featuring the M3 Chip: A Closer Look

Apple’s latest refresh of its ultra-lightweight MacBook Air laptops places an emphasis on enhanced AI capabilities, multitasking, and extended battery life.

Introducing the M3 Chip MacBook Air Models

Apple has rolled out its latest MacBook iterations, the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air, powered by the new M3 chips. These laptops maintain the aesthetic of their predecessors, featuring notched displays within aluminum unibody cases, available in four colors: Midnight, Starlight, Space Gray, and Silver. Equipped with the most recent M3 chipsets, they promise superior performance and efficiency.

Priced identically to the previous models, the 13-inch MacBook Air is available starting at $1,099, while the 15-inch version begins at $1,299. Pre-orders open today, with the official launch set for March 8.

Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, shared, “The MacBook Air is our most beloved Mac, chosen by more customers than any other laptop. With the introduction of the M3 chip and new features, it becomes even more exceptional.”

The spotlight for the new models is on the M3 chip. This 3-nanometer processor, boasting an 8-core CPU and up to a 10-core GPU alongside up to 24GB of unified memory, makes the latest Airs up to 60% faster than M1 models and 13 times quicker than the most advanced Intel-based Air laptops, as per Apple’s claims.

The inclusion of the M3 chip enhances the MacBook’s 3D graphics and game design capabilities with hardware-accelerated mesh shading and ray tracing. Additionally, a 16-core Neural Engine boosts on-device machine learning capabilities, optimizing video calls, real-time speech and text translation, accessibility features, and more.

Key Features of the New MacBook Airs

Both MacBook Airs feature Liquid Retina displays with up to 500 nits of brightness and now support dual external monitor connectivity even when the laptop is closed—ideal for professionals and creators who require multiple displays. The transition to Wi-Fi 6E offers improved download speeds.

Apple will continue selling the 13-inch MacBook Air (M2) at a reduced price, adding even more value to a model previously acclaimed as the Best Product of 2022 by ZDNET.

Entering the AI PC Competition

Through demonstrations of AI applications in Blender, Microsoft 365, and FreeChat, Apple illustrates how the M3-equipped MacBook Air can efficiently handle various AI models, positioning it as a capable device for AI-related tasks without needing a “Pro” label.

The MacBook Air’s portability makes it a preferred choice for students, developers, and mobile users, with Apple asserting its long-standing participation in the AI PC market. The company claims the new MacBook Air is “the best consumer laptop for AI.”

Midnight Color Upgrade and Dual-Monitor Support

A noteworthy design update is the new “breakthrough anodization seal” on the Midnight color variant, aiming to reduce fingerprint visibility. Additionally, the ability to support dual monitors with the laptop closed marks a significant enhancement, previously limited to higher-end M series processors.

These updates may seem minor but represent significant improvements in performance, efficiency, and user experience. Users of M2 MacBook Airs may not need to upgrade immediately, but those with older models will find the M3 MacBook Air an enticing proposition.
