New Satellite Features May Be Planned For the iPhone: Here’s What We Know

Apple plans New Features! Apple reportedly intends to introduce new satellite-based features for the iPhone. For example, the company could allow certain apps to work through a satellite connection or improve connectivity performance in upcoming models.

Apple is heavily investing in satellites to boost iPhone sales. As a reminder, the company partners with Globalstar to enable users of compatible models to send emergency SOS messages from areas without Wi‑Fi or mobile data. In some countries, it’s even possible to exchange simple text messages via satellite. And the good news is that, according to journalist Mark Gurman’s latest newsletter, Apple plans to continue improving this satellite experience by adding new features.

For instance, Apple is reportedly developing an API that would allow third-party iPhone apps to use a satellite connection. The company is also said to be working on a feature that would let its Apple Maps app function through satellite connectivity, as well as improvements to satellite messaging (for example, supporting photo sharing). In addition, Apple might enhance the iPhone’s connection performance with satellites.

So far, iPhone satellite features have been free, but Apple might eventually require users to pay fees to the satellite service provider to access certain new services.

What if SpaceX bought Globalstar?

Some of Apple’s planned innovations would require upgrades to Globalstar’s infrastructure, its satellite partner. However, Mark Gurman notes that Apple would help finance these improvements.

Meanwhile, there are also rumors suggesting a possible acquisition of Globalstar by SpaceX (the company behind the Starlink service). Such a buyout could complicate things for Apple, but it might also open the door to a direct collaboration between Apple and Starlink.

As always, this information should be taken cautiously, since it doesn’t come from official sources. Still, satellites are currently the main way to bring connectivity to isolated areas around the world, so it would make sense for Apple to keep optimizing this experience for its products.
