Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra vs Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max

Samsung unveiled its new flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra at the Unpacked event a few days ago. This year’s Galaxy S23 lineup includes Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus, with the entry level S23 costing $800 whereas the most premium Ultra would set you back at least $1,200. The Ultra gets a whopping 200-megapixel main camera along with special rendition of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip that Samsung says has been specially optimized for the Galaxy S23 line. The Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus comes with many significant upgrades including larger batteries, better front-facing cameras and a slightly tweaked design, while the Plus model gets twice as much storage. The question now is can this new lineup of Galaxy phones one up Apple? Let’s find out. Apple have been accused this year that the new iPhone 14 is very similar to the outgoing iPhone 13 with only minimal upgrade running the same A15 Bionic chips from last year’s Pro model. For a fair comparison, let us compare the flagship versions of both phones, i.e. the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra has a 6.8-inch screen capable of 120Hz refresh rate while retaining the same QHD resolution as before. Samsung claims they have improved the Eye comfort shield feature which is now more effective in limiting blue light and uses an improved comfort mode to adjust color tones and contrast. The display is crisp and you can choose between Natural and Vivid mode. The iPhone 14 Pro Max features a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and a Super Retina XDR resolution (between FHD and QHD). The display is impressive and the colors are vivid and quite accurate. Apple has ditched the display notch that housed Face ID and replaced it with a more sleek pill-shaped screen cut-out dubbed the Dynamic Island that houses an upgraded TrueDepth camera system. The Galaxy S23 Ultra features larger cameras than the S22 Ultra, but Samsung has largely retained the design and still includes an S Pen slot and a SIM card tray where as Apple has ditched the SIM card for eSIM. The S23 Ultra also features a USB-C port, while Apple sticks with its Lightning port.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra has a 6.8-inch screen capable of 120Hz refresh rate while retaining the same QHD resolution as before. The iPhone 14 Pro Max features a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and a Super Retina XDR resolution (between FHD and QHD).

The iPhone 14 Pro Max has a new 48MP main camera that can shoot both 12MP and 48MP RAW formats. The ultra-wide sensor also gets an upgrade and is now twice as big. This along with Apple’s rejigged photo processing (Photonic Engine) gives much sharper ultrawide photos even in less ideal situations. The selfie camera is the same as last year, but for the first time has autofocus, which works great for group selfies. You can now record in 4K and at 24 frames per second in what is called a Cinematic Mode and Apple has also tweaked the image stabilization for better results. The biggest and the most talked-about upgrade is the new 200MP sensor on the S23 Ultra. The new 200MP main camera sensor is capable of combining 16 individual pixels into one, allowing for more light captured per pixel.

There is an amazing video doing rounds on the social media where an S23 Ultra captures some great pictures of the moon with impeccable detail at 100x zoom. To that end, Samsung has introduced a new camera feature called Astro Hyperlapse making it easier to shoot clips of star movements or trails by selecting the 300x option. You can now shoot in RAW format built into the basic camera app. This mode shoots images at a 50MP resolution while allowing you to play around with every setting you would see on a mirrorless camera, including shutter speed, aperture, ISO sensitivity, and more. The selfie camera also gets an upgrade. While dropping in resolution from 40MP to just 12MP, the camera now has features like autofocus, 60fps for videos, and a Super HDR capture mode and the results are astonishing. The Galaxy S23 Ultra offers improved video stabilization in video and video recording now goes up to 8K at 30 fps (up from 24 fps) with a wider angle for recording (from 57 to 80 degrees). The new Adaptive VDIS analyzes and subdivides movements, while simultaneously recognizing the lighting conditions in order to stabilize the video appropriately for that specific scene. The Galaxy S23 series comes with an AI software that helps maintain a more clear image when shooting videos in low light conditions.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max has a new 48MP main camera that can shoot both 12MP and 48MP RAW formats. The ultra-wide sensor also gets an upgrade and is now twice as big. The biggest and the most talked-about upgrade is the new 200MP sensor on the S23 Ultra. The new 200MP main camera sensor is capable of combining 16 individual pixels into one, allowing for more light captured per pixel.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max received the brand new iOS 16 which comes with a number of new improvements like customizable the lock screen with widgets, photos, and enhancements to the always-on display. Other key highlights include the ability to unsend texts and edit them and the new iPhones finally get battery percentage indicator. The Dynamic Island feature is great. The notch is replaced by Dynamic Island where you can quickly view you alerts and Live Activities, including sports scores and other important updates like progress of your food order or ride share. The Galaxy S23 Ultra runs on Android 13 topped off with the new One UI 5.1 software for Galaxy S23 Ultra which also is no short of features. The S Pen continues to remain a unique feature of the Samsung Ultra phones that lets you take notes, draw and sketch on the Samsung Notes app while collaborating others in real-time. There are now advanced controls that allow Galaxy Book users to control the Galaxy S23 Ultra with the laptop’s mouse, keyboard, or touchpad. A media output for Wi-Fi speakers is also included.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is powered by a special version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 as mentioned and has slightly higher clock speeds for its CPU and GPU. Other hardware specs include 8/12GB of LPPDR5 RAM, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage. The S23 has two physical SIM slots and supports one eSIM. It has a 5,000mAh battery with 45W fast-charging capabilities. Connectivity features include 5G, Wi-Fi 6e, and Bluetooth 5.3. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is powered by Apple’s new A16 Bionic chipset, 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and will have a range of storage options including 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB version. The iPhone 14 Pro Max in the US market does not get any physical sim slot favoring the eSim while the rest of the world gets a dual SIM device, with nano SIM and eSIM support. The iPhone 14 Pro Max has a smaller battery at 4,323mAh, but is better. It supports fast charging up to 30W and MagSafe and Qi wireless charging are also available.

The entry-level of the premium iPhone 14 Pro Max (128 GB) is available for $1099 and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra entry-level (8GB RAM + 256GB storage) will set you back by $1,199.
