Artificial Intelligence For All on iPhones: Hidden Or Not?
Apple has remained relatively silent about its endeavors in generative AI. However, various AI features already significantly influence iPhone functionalities, enhancing major applications such as Camera, Photos, and Siri.
Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, has lately been more outspoken regarding AI, indicating a potential shift towards a more public emphasis on AI technologies by Apple. Over a year since the emergence of ChatGPT and the ensuing competition in tech innovations, Cook acknowledged during a February earnings call that Apple is exploring generative AI opportunities, describing them as “a huge opportunity for Apple with gen AI and AI,” though without delving into specifics.
The company has recently announced the date for its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, set to commence on June 10, where it traditionally introduces software enhancements for the iPhone and other devices. It’s plausible that this event could reveal additional AI functionalities for the iPhone.
While Cook offered few details, research indicates Apple might be aiming to integrate on-device AI into its iPhones. This objective was underscored by the announcement of new MacBook Air models this week, which Apple promotes as the “optimal consumer laptop for AI.”
The future of iPhone and its features remains under Apple’s purview. However, here are some notable AI-driven features currently available on the iPhone:
Digitally Clone Your Voice
Without boasting a chatbot, Apple leverages AI through iOS 17’s Personal Voice feature, enabling users at risk of losing their ability to speak to digitally clone their voices for easier communication. The process involves reading aloud 150 phrases, after which AI creates a synthetic voice based on your speech.
Extract Text from Photos Easily
Introduced in iOS 15, Live Text is an AI-powered feature that recognizes text in images, facilitating easy text copying and pasting.
Enhanced AutoCorrect Functionality
Apple’s latest updates have refined AutoCorrect, allowing more accurate error correction and customized predictive text. This enhancement stems from iOS 17’s advanced language model, which utilizes machine learning for better word predictions.
Advancements in Camera Technology
The iPhone’s camera benefits extensively from AI, with features like Portrait Mode and Cinematic Mode relying on AI to achieve effects like bokeh and dynamic focus adjustment. iOS 17 introduced the ability to recognize pets in photos, aiding in organization.
Future of Siri and iPhone AI
Siri, present since iOS 5, might soon witness significant advancements. Reports suggest Apple plans to enrich Siri’s capabilities with large language models, part of generative AI, potentially enabling Siri to execute more complex tasks through simple voice commands.
As Apple typically unveils new iPhone software features at its Worldwide Developer Conference, further insights into Apple’s AI strategies for the iPhone are anticipated in June, 2024.
