What’s amazing is that many apps offer much more than fun and entertainment–they can be your lifeline, helping to keep you in tip-top shape. So, to commemorate the 11th anniversary of Apple’s App Store (July 10, 2008), here’s my pick of some of the latest health apps, which are all compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPad touch, and can be used by up to 6 family members under Family Sharing
Blood Pressure Tracker Plus
This is an easy-to-use app lets you track and monitor your blood pressure, pulse, and weight anytime, with unlimited history. If you’re looking for a simple, no-frills introduction to the world of health apps, this one’s for you. It’s free, and is available in English or Spanish. It requires iOS 11.0 or higher.

This app bundle includes all things female: ovulation, fertility, and pregnancy. There’s nothing this app can’t do! Women can track their periods and cycles to prevent pregnancy—or they can try to get pregnant and record every detail about themselves and their baby, and complain and compare notes with other women to their heart’s content. Glow is free, with a subscription plan for custom features. It’s available in English, for both Android and iOS 11.0 or higher. (Note: In September 2019, iOS 13 will also include female health tracking.)

Glucose Blood Sugar Tracker
This app makes it a breeze for diabetics and pre-diabetics to manage their blood sugar. You can track your blood sugar levels, insulin, other medications, carbohydrates, ketones, weight, and blood pressure. (Note: It can only provided estimated–not exact–A1C levels.) It syncs between your devices with HealthKit, so you can share information with healthcare providers and even view your data on a graph. It’s free, and is available in English and 5 more languages. It requires iOS 11.0 or later.

Looking for an oasis of peace while living la vida loca? You can find it in this app, which transforms you into a virtual monk through meditation, mindfulness, concentration, and improved sleep. While it’s a useful adjunct for treatment of anxiety, depression, OCD, and PTSD, it is NOT intended to treat serious conditions. The first 10 sessions are free, and $12.99/month or $94.99/year thereafter. It’s available in English, French, and German, for both Android and iOS 10.0 or later.

Do you think there’s no such thing as free medical advice? Think again! With this app, you can have two-minute consult with an experienced physician for free, no insurance required! This doc can check symptoms and answer questions about many primary care conditions; if necessary, you can arrange a low-cost virtual visit. It’s HIPAA/GDPR compliant, so it’s secure and private. It’s free for the first year, and is available in English and 29 more languages. You must be 18 to use it. The app requires iOS 9.0 or later.

Lifesum: Diet & Macro Tracker
Are you a foodie, or are you and food in a complicated relationship? If so, this app will thrill you: it’s got a food tracker, macro tracker for your daily calories and nutrition, recipes and meal planners for varied diets, and feedback on your progress. It integrates with the HealthKit app. It’s free, but with a subscription, you get enhanced features and sync with many popular fitness apps. It’s available in English and 10 more languages, and requires iOS 11.5 or higher.

Moodpath: Depression & Anxiety
Do you know where your head is at? If you don’t, this app will tell you. You can keep a mood journal, do exercises based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), get support and guidance for depression and anxiety, and even print a bi-weekly mental health assessment you can share with your shrink. It’s free, and is available in English and German. It requires iOS 10.3 or higher.

Qardio Heart Health
This is an award-winning app, for good reason. Qardio works not only with Apple Watch, but with the QardioArm blood pressure monitor, body scale, and wearable ECG/EKG monitor. It’s like being in a cardiac lab: You can track your data from these devices, record it in a journal, and sync it with other apps, like Apple Health and MyFitnessPal. It’s free, and is available in English and 14 other languages. It requires iOS 10.0 or higher.
