What’s amazing is that many apps offer much more than fun and entertainment–they can be your lifeline, helping to keep you in tip-top shape. So, to commemorate the 11th anniversary of Apple’s App Store (July 10, 2008), here’s my pick of some of the latest health apps, which are all compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPad touch, and can be used by up to 6 family members under Family Sharing

This is an easy-to-use app lets you track and monitor your blood pressure, pulse, and weight anytime, with unlimited history. If you’re looking for a simple, no-frills introduction to the world of health apps, this one’s for you. It’s free, and is available in English or Spanish. It requires iOS 11.0 or higher.

Women can track their periods and cycles to prevent pregnancy—or they can try to get pregnant and record every detail about themselves and their baby, and complain and compare notes with other women to their heart’s content. Glow is free, with a subscription plan for custom features. It’s available in English, for both Android and iOS 11.0 or higher. (Note: In September 2019, iOS 13 will also include female health tracking.)

It syncs between your devices with HealthKit, so you can share information with healthcare providers and even view your data on a graph. It’s free, and is available in English and 5 more languages. It requires iOS 11.0 or later.

Looking for an oasis of peace while living la vida loca? You can find it in this app, which transforms you into a virtual monk through meditation, mindfulness, concentration, and improved sleep. While it’s a useful adjunct for treatment of anxiety, depression, OCD, and PTSD, it is NOT intended to treat serious conditions. The first 10 sessions are free, and $12.99/month or $94.99/year thereafter. It’s available in English, French, and German, for both Android and iOS 10.0 or later.

It’s free for the first year, and is available in English and 29 more languages. You must be 18 to use it. The app requires iOS 9.0 or later.

It’s free, and is available in English and German. It requires iOS 10.3 or higher.

This is an award-winning app, for good reason. Qardio works not only with Apple Watch, but with the QardioArm blood pressure monitor, body scale, and wearable ECG/EKG monitor. It’s like being in a cardiac lab: You can track your data from these devices, record it in a journal, and sync it with other apps, like Apple Health and MyFitnessPal. It’s free, and is available in English and 14 other languages. It requires iOS 10.0 or higher.
