Apple’s Glowtime: What’s New and Interesting with the Smartphone Lineup?

On September 9, 2024, Apple held its “It’s Glowtime” presentation, where it unveiled the new iPhone 16 lineup, the new Apple Watch 10, and AirPods 4.

What’s new and interesting with the smartphone lineup?

The iPhones now have slightly larger screens (the Max model has a 6.9″ screen), with thinner bezels, but the top notch with the camera and sensors is still there. The frames of the models are made from titanium.

The new A18 Pro platform, which Apple claims to be the fastest mobile platform in the world, powers the devices.

Both the Pro and Pro Max now have the same camera setup (previously, they differed): a 48 MP main camera with a 1/1.28″ sensor, dual-pixel PDAF, sensor-shift OIS, and 4K 120fps video; a 48 MP ultra-wide camera; and a 12 MP camera with a 5x optical zoom (1/3.06″).

There’s a very interesting new Camera Control button. It’s not exactly a button, but a touchpad that allows not only for taking pictures but also for zooming and adjusting other settings.

Apple describes this button as follows: “The sapphire glass surface with a smooth texture is surrounded by a color-matched thin stainless steel rim. Inside is a high-precision force sensor with haptic feedback that simulates the shutter action of a DSLR camera. And the new touch sensor—Apple’s first of its kind—recognizes precise actions like presses and swipes.”

It all looks very interesting.

Moreover, the iPhones can now pause video recording.

There’s also a new Visual Intelligence feature that allows users to point the camera at something and get information about the object. Google Lens and Bixby Camera have been able to do this for about seven years, but of course, it needs to be compared in practice.

The phones come with the built-in Apple Intelligence system, which can do a lot with texts and can also transcribe audio.

It is claimed that the new iPhones are equipped with four studio-quality microphones, and the In-Frame Mix feature can separate a person’s voice from background noise when recording video.

Apple also promises a boost in battery life: the iPhone 16 Pro Max can play videos for up to 33 hours (impressive, right!), and the iPhone 16 Pro for up to 27 hours.

Wired charging remains at 20W (which is rather weak), while MagSafe wireless charging is at 25W.

Samsung’s Reaction

Apple held yet another keynote to unveil its new range of iPhones. The event sparked a lot of curiosity, allowing the American tech giant to officially present its new iPhone 16 models, along with some other exciting products. As expected, Apple’s main rival, Samsung, couldn’t resist commenting on the news—not through a video ad or a native post on social media, but via an American YouTuber with over 270,000 subscribers.

Indeed, for many years now, Samsung has taken great pleasure in directly challenging Apple on the marketing front. With every new Apple announcement, the Korean giant releases an ad and/or a social media post to publicly mock its greatest rival. Sometimes the result is amusing, but there are times when Samsung stumbles…

The Korean giant also reminded everyone that the iPhone still isn’t foldable by retweeting its own message from September 2022 (“Let us know when it folds”), accompanied by a simple, “Still waiting.”

And that’s precisely what happened last night, shortly after the presentation of the new Apple Watch 10. On the X network, content creator Quinn Nelson took a jab at Apple regarding the “new superb design” of its Watch 10. “Uh, it’s the same,” Quinn Nelson said, to which the Samsung Mobile US account replied, “You said it, not us.” Nelson quickly shot back, “Hey, that’s just like your smartphones every year!”

The Korean giant also reminded everyone that the iPhone still isn’t foldable by retweeting its own message from September 2022 (“Let us know when it folds”), accompanied by a simple, “Still waiting.” This was followed by another tweet saying, “You know… maybe we set the bar too high regarding your expectations for AI,” obviously referring to Apple Intelligence.
