Google’s New Revolution Called “TurboQuant” Is Unveiled

Google’s New Revolution Is Called “TurboQuant”, a Compression Algorithm

A few days ago, Google unveiled its TurboQuant compression algorithm. It’s not a consumer product, but it could significantly reduce the cost of AI by lowering memory requirements and greatly improving other company products, such as its search engine.

Since its creation, Google — now Alphabet — has achieved numerous successes beyond its search engine. Among these are YouTube, which has become an entertainment giant, and Waymo, now the world leader in robotaxis. And the next revolution from the Mountain View company might just be TurboQuant.

Behind this name lies a new compression algorithm developed by Google Research, the company’s scientific branch. It could help reduce the resources needed to deploy large-scale AI models such as Gemini. With this algorithm, Google aims to eliminate a bottleneck that other companies have tried to overcome by investing in additional hardware: the key-value cache.

And the next revolution from the Mountain View company might just be TurboQuant.

“During text generation, AI models often repeat the same calculations, which can slow the process down. Key-value caching is a technique that speeds things up by storing important information from previous steps,” explains an article from the Hugging Face platform on the topic.

And Google’s new technology could bring a tremendous gain in efficiency, as the company claims TurboQuant delivers “perfect” results while reducing allocated memory size by a factor of six or more. Moreover, the algorithm can also boost the performance of large language models.

Is this the end of the RAM shortage?

The announcement of TurboQuant, made on March 26, negatively affected the stock prices of storage and RAM manufacturers. However, the arrival of this technology doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the memory chip shortage (which impacts the prices of consumer devices like PCs and smartphones). Indeed, Google’s algorithm only operates during inference, not during AI training, which also requires a massive number of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips.

Furthermore, for now, TurboQuant is still in the research stage. Google is expected to reveal more about its discovery at ICLR 2026, an artificial intelligence – focused conference in April. In any case, if this technology lives up to its promises, it could revolutionize artificial intelligence as well as other Google products, including its search engine.

Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, compared Google’s breakthrough to the launch of DeepSeek, which also shook the tech world with its efficiency.

On the social network X, many users have compared TurboQuant to Pied Piper—the fictional compression technology that revolutionizes the internet in the series Silicon Valley.
