Apple’s next update promises a major shift: the iPhone camera could become fully customizable. For the first time, users would be able to adapt the interface and controls to their photographic and video needs, aligning the device’s hardware capabilities with more flexible and powerful software.

With the arrival of iOS 27, the camera app would move beyond its historical limitations and allow personalized control configurations, according to leaks. So-called widgets could be freely arranged at the top of the screen, enabling quick access to each user’s most-used functions.
In addition, a transparent drawer emerging from the bottom would be organized by categories, from which users could choose which options appear, including flash, exposure control, timer, resolution, depth of field, and photographic styles.
Each mode—whether for taking photos or recording video—would have its own set of adjustable widgets. This means the user experience would adapt to the specific context, offering different tools depending on the type of capture.
This level of customization aims to cover features that previously required navigating multiple system menus, simplifying and speeding up the creative process.
With the arrival of iOS 27, the camera app would move beyond its historical limitations and allow personalized control configurations.
One of the most significant advancements would be the addition of a dedicated Siri mode within the camera app. This mode would have its own space in the options carousel, alongside Photo, Video, and Portrait.
When activated, the shutter button would turn into the Apple Intelligence logo, allowing access to advanced AI capabilities. Visual Intelligence — previously hidden behind the camera control—would take on a central role, offering new possibilities for image capture and analysis.
The Photos app would also see notable improvements. Expected additions include generative framing tools that allow recomposing an image after it has been taken, as well as features to enhance the resolution of existing photos.
These additions aim to make editing and improving images intuitive and possible directly on the device, without relying on external apps.

Software customization comes alongside hardware evolution in the iPhone. The iPhone 18 Pro, expected in 2026, would introduce variable aperture—a first for the lineup.
This feature would allow manual control of depth of field, bringing the experience closer to that of a dedicated camera, where this adjustment is typically made using a physical dial. The new iOS 27 interface would be key in helping users take advantage of this technical advancement with ease.
Until now, features like variable aperture would have been managed automatically by algorithms, without direct user input. With the update, these controls are expected to become part of customizable settings, letting users decide how and when to use each function according to their preferences and creative needs.
The development of these camera improvements has not been accidental. The addition of Sebastiaan de With—co-founder of Lux and creator of the Halide app—to Apple’s human interface design team marks a turning point.
Halide is known for delivering an advanced and customizable camera experience on iPhone, something the native app has not achieved until now.
This hiring occurred during a period of change within Apple’s design team, following Alan Dye’s departure to Meta and John Ternus taking on new responsibilities as future CEO.
The decision to recruit talent from the independent developer community signals Apple’s openness to ideas and concepts that have proven effective outside its official ecosystem.
Users and professionals have long called for a camera app that matches the quality of Apple’s hardware. If the rumors are confirmed at the upcoming WWDC on June 8, 2026, iOS 27 could mark the definitive alignment between hardware and software on the iPhone.
