What Happens If I Press the Power Button on My Phone Five Times
Our cell phones are comprehensive devices that even hide some functions users might not be aware of. For instance, there is an option that allows us to make emergency calls with just a few movements.
This trick can be useful in situations where we are unable to unlock the phone and go through the entire process of making a call. A shortcut through which it will be possible to connect with our country’s help services, all through the power button.
How Does This Emergency Function Work?
When we press the power button on our cell phone five times, most models, whether they are Android, iPhone, or Huawei, activate something known as “alert mode”. This mode is designed to offer a quick and simple way to request help if we are in an imminent danger situation.
The significance of this function lies in its ability to save lives. In emergency situations, every second counts, and pressing the power button five times can be the difference between receiving help quickly or being left without assistance because we cannot go through the normal process of making a call or entering a messaging app to notify about the situation.
The alert mode allows notifying emergency contacts about a dangerous situation
On Android devices, activating the alert mode will cause the phone to emit a loud alarm and display a countdown on the screen. If the user does not stop this action, the phone will automatically make a call to the emergency services of the country in which it is located.
For iPhones, the function is slightly different. After pressing the power button five times, the device will offer two options: turn off the cell phone or make an emergency call through the ‘SOS’ feature.
This option allows the user to quickly contact emergency services or the police, providing a quick and efficient way to request help in case of imminent danger.
While these emergency functions are very useful, it’s important to remember they should only be used in real emergency situations. Pressing the power button five times should not be taken lightly, as it can lead to an involuntary and false emergency call.
How to Set Up the Emergency Call?
Although this function is activated by default on all cell phones, it’s possible to customize the type of actions the phone will perform once the alert sound ends and alert mode is activated.
By going to Settings and looking for the Emergency SOS option on Android, it’s possible to make certain configurations. For example, we can activate these three functions: that the call is made to an emergency number in our country, that information is shared with contacts so they know our real-time location and receive constant updates, and that a video starts recording to know what’s happening around us.
Google’s Pixel phones have this option in the Android operating system.
According to the company, this tool is “rarely used,” but this option is quite useful for some people who have several devices from the company at home and who, when trying to activate the Assistant through the voice command, all end up hiding, giving different results and creating chaos. Therefore, using the button helps to ensure that only the cell phone hears the command.
