New Line of iMacs Coming This Year, Apple Revealed at WWDC

It’s never too early to plan your gifts and presents for Christmas! This year, you can start as early as this June. Why? Because new updated iMacs are coming, that’s why! Just recently in Things Apple Can or May Roll Out on WWDC. I was pessimistic and wrote that Apple seemed to have pulled the plug on iMacs. Gosh, I’ve never been more glad to be wrong!

The emphasis will be on processing power and displays, Apple announced. The overhaul of the iconic Apple product family will also include the latest macOS: High Sierra.

The Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Jose, California, gave a gift to all Mac devotees. Apple CEO Tim Cook called it the “heart and soul of Apple,” stressing the fact that “no-one can match the Mac’s deep integration of hardware and software.”

Nowadays, when the MacBooks processing power is getting a lot of criticism, the iMacs upgrade can give the Cupertino company a new spin- which it has been needing badly for quite some time. The long wait from the last update of 2015 is over, but the details are still scarce.

They promised to roll out three new models to the product line: an iMac 21.5-inch, a 21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display, and a 27-inch iMac Retina 5K.

The improved displays according to the hardware engineering VP John Turnus will be 500 nits, (or 43 percent brighter than the previous generation), and will support up to one billion colors.

As for the CPU, there’s no surprise here: the line moves to Intel’s 7th generation, Kaby Lake and the RAM will be also boosted.

The 21.5-inch model features up to 32GB, while larger sizes, for instance the 27-inch, can sport up to 64GB, but only customized iterations.

The SSDs will be up to 2 TB in customized versions and are promised to be 50% faster than those aboard the old iMacs. (Oh, what a magic phrase ‘old iMac’. It means, we now have new ones! And by the way, you can sell us your oldies. We’ll take care of them, we promise!)

Entry-level iMacs will stick to integrated Intel Iris Plus Graphics, which is up to 80 percent more powerful than the previous generation, but is still a built-in graphic that has to borrow a chunk from the RAM.

4K iMacs ask for discrete graphics of course, and they will get an AMD Radeon discrete GPU for content creation, VR, and gaming. Tornus promised “Up to 5.5 teraflops of graphics compute,” which is a huge figure for the all-in-one PC. Beware, Surface Studio!

What about the sockets? Will Apple ditch some which are crucial for smooth work with an iMac? We can account for 2 USB-C connectors with Thunderbolt and Fusion drives as standard. As you see, no USB 3.0 or 3.1. But, we’ll see.
The prices hurt though. The iMac 21.5-inch’s starting price is $1099, for a 21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display you’ll have to shell out $1299, and a 27-inch iMac Retina 5K’s will cost you $1799 at least. The price for build-to-order iMacs are soaring as high as the orbital station!

But, it’s not the time to faint now. You have to face the iMac Pro news. A 5k Retina display, 8-core Intel Xeon processor, 10-core Xeon processor, or 18-core processor, AMD’s Radeon Vega graphics, and up to 16Gb of VRAM with 22 teraflops of half precision and built-in 10GB Ethernet. The Rolls-Royce of the PC world, that one is. The price tag will meet the position: $4999, although that’s not the limit either. The customized corporative iteration can cost you around $7,000.

No entry configuration, Apple warns, no compromises – just the best workstation in the world. The one to support 2 5K displays and 2 RAID arrays hooked up.

And all this joy is coming in December. Santa will have problems squeezing the iMac Pro through the chimney.
