New Features iOS 18.1 Brings to Your iPhone

All the New Features iOS 18.1 Brings to Your iPhone

The latest iOS 18.1 update introduces Apple Intelligence features for select users and brings several enhancements and fixes for everyone.

Released in October, iOS 18.1 follows the earlier bug fixes in iOS 18.0.1. After the initial release of iOS 18 in September, which added major updates like RCS messaging and home screen customization, this update expands functionality for many iPhones. It also introduces exclusive Apple Intelligence features for users outside the EU and China who own an iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, or devices in the iPhone 16 lineup.

To download the update, navigate to Settings > General > Software Update, tap Update Now, and follow the on-screen instructions.

What’s New in iOS 18.1:

Call Recording

iOS 18.1 enables call recording on your iPhone. During a call, tap the soundbar icon in the top-left corner to start recording. A 3-second delay will play an automated announcement to notify both parties that the call is being recorded.

Once the call ends or you stop recording, the file is saved in your Notes app, where newer iPhones (like the iPhone 14 Pro) can also generate transcripts. Note that this feature may not be available in all regions, so check local laws before using it.

Apple Intelligence Enhancements

New tools like email proofreading, photo cleanup, and Siri improvements are now available on eligible iPhones. To access these features, join the Apple Intelligence waiting list via Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Join Waitlist.

However, some features, such as the Genmoji emoji generator, will roll out in future updates. These tools are exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, and the iPhone 16 lineup, excluding base models and older devices.

To access these features, join the Apple Intelligence waiting list via Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Join Waitlist.

Expanded RCS Messaging

RCS messaging, introduced with iOS 18, now includes support for Messages for Business. This update allows businesses to communicate with users outside of iMessage, broadening its utility.

Control Center Updates

iOS 18 revamped the Control Center, and iOS 18.1 refines these changes. Connectivity settings (Wi-Fi, VPN, AirDrop, etc.) are now displayed as tiles for easier access. New controls, including Level and Measure, can also be added, and you can reset the Control Center to its default layout via Settings > Control Center > Reset Control Center.

Apple ID Email Management

Users can now change or add a primary email address for their Apple ID. Navigate to Settings > Apple ID > Sign-In & Security to update or assign a primary email address.

Home Screen Widget Tints

With iOS 18.1, home screen widgets like Clock and Battery now inherit the tint applied to your apps, creating a more cohesive look.

Sleep Apnea Detection

Sleep apnea detection, introduced in watchOS 11, is now supported on compatible Apple Watch models paired with an iPhone running iOS 18.1.

Expanded Emoji Keyboard

The emoji keyboard now includes a dedicated section for custom stickers and easier access to Memoji. Additionally, emojis appear slightly larger.

Drag and Drop Between Devices

Seamlessly drag and drop files between an iPhone running iOS 18.1 and a MacBook with macOS Sequoia 15.1 when using screen mirroring.

With these updates, iOS 18.1 enhances functionality, improves usability, and introduces exciting new tools across eligible devices.
