OpenAI’s Latest Acquisition Speaks Volumes About Its Ambitions

OpenAI, renowned for creating the artificial intelligence known as ChatGPT, has recently acquired a remote collaboration service. Could ChatGPT soon be able to control your PC on command?

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, appears to be entering a new phase of development: one in which it makes acquisitions to enhance its products. A few days ago, Multi (formerly Remotion), a small American company, announced its acquisition by OpenAI. Besides being one of the few known public acquisitions by OpenAI, Multi has developed technology that could be very useful for the creator of ChatGPT. Multi offers a collaboration application that, in addition to screen sharing, also allows for remote computer control.

“Recently, we’ve been increasingly asking ourselves how we should work with computers. Not on or using computers, but truly with computers. With AI. We think this is one of the most important product questions of our time. We are therefore excited to announce that Multi is joining OpenAI!” reads the announcement of this acquisition. Multi also announced the shutdown of its service, which will cease operations as of July 24.

What Is OpenAI Preparing?

Many theories are circulating online. Some suggest that OpenAI could use the technology developed by Multi for remote collaboration to enable the ChatGPT application to perform actions on the user’s computer at their request.

Currently, Apple, Microsoft, and Google are preparing generative AI-based features directly integrated into their software platforms. Apple Intelligence, for example, will be able to interact with iOS applications. OpenAI, which does not control these platforms, could offer similar features by leveraging Multi’s technology and expertise. Notably, OpenAI has already developed an application for Mac, which was recently made available to everyone.

Is OpenAI Shifting More Towards Businesses?

The acquisition of Multi could also simply strengthen OpenAI’s position in the enterprise market. In addition to its paid version for individuals, ChatGPT also offers subscriptions for businesses, which are a significant revenue source for OpenAI. Between January and April, the number of users of ChatGPT’s business subscription grew from 150,000 to 600,000.

In June, OpenAI also formalized the acquisition of Rockset, a company that “enables users, developers, and enterprises to better leverage their data and gain real-time insights when using AI products and creating smarter applications.” OpenAI announced that this solution will be integrated into its products.

In Conclusion:

  • OpenAI has acquired a company called Multi, which developed a remote collaboration service (with screen sharing and remote control).
  • Theories online suggest that OpenAI might use Multi’s technology to allow ChatGPT to integrate better with users’ machines.
  • However, Multi could also help OpenAI strengthen its services for businesses, which are a significant revenue source through subscriptions.
