Samsung Ending Sales of the Galaxy Z TriFold After 3 months

Why is Samsung Ending Sales of the Galaxy Z TriFold After Only 3 months?

Samsung is already putting an end to sales of the Galaxy Z TriFold, its first triple-foldable smartphone. Sources cite high production costs, made worse by a shortage of memory chips. Others believe Samsung’s main goal was simply to showcase a technical achievement. Moreover, the manufacturer is still uncertain whether it wants to launch a successor to the Galaxy Z TriFold.

Introduced in December and launched on the U.S. market at the end of February, the Galaxy Z TriFold is Samsung’s first smartphone that folds into three sections. The device was heavily teased, and as a result, highly anticipated.

Yet, three months after its release, Samsung is already announcing the end of sales of this triple-foldable phone. According to Bloomberg, the news was confirmed by a Samsung representative. The company will first halt Galaxy Z TriFold sales in Korea, then sell off remaining stock in the United States.

Why is Samsung ending sales?

Is the Galaxy Z TriFold a flop? Not exactly. Priced at $2,899, the device was a niche product. However, the Korean news agency Yonhap reported that it enjoyed “strong popularity.” Still, sources told Yonhap that Samsung decided to stop sales due to high production costs, compounded by the shortage of RAM. Other sources suggested that Samsung’s true intention from the start was to demonstrate a technological feat rather than mass-produce this triple-folding smartphone.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg recalls that a month ago, during an interview, Choi Won‑joon, Head of Operations in Samsung’s Mobile Experience Division, said Samsung had not yet decided whether there would be a successor to the Galaxy Z TriFold. The reason cited: the manufacturing process for this type of device is complex.

Nonetheless, some of the innovations introduced with the Galaxy Z TriFold might eventually appear in more affordable products.
