Tesla to Make a Major Presentation on October 10: Are Robotaxis Finally Here?

Tesla has just released an invitation for an event that will take place on October 10. The automaker is expected to unveil its new autonomous driving service, which will allow its vehicles to become robotaxis.

In the United States, Tesla already offers a service called Full Self-Driving (Supervised), which allows its vehicles to benefit from an autonomous driving system but with human driver supervision. However, Elon Musk’s company is also working on an even more advanced system that would enable its vehicles to become robotaxis, similar to the autonomous cars operated by Waymo (a subsidiary of Alphabet, Google’s parent company). Elon Musk has teased this technology several times, and today, Tesla seems finally ready to make an official presentation.

For several weeks, rumors have suggested that Tesla could unveil its new autonomous driving technology on October 10. It seems these rumors were accurate. Indeed, Tesla has just released an invitation for an event to be held in Los Angeles on October 10. The event’s title, “We, Robot,” leaves little room for doubt.

A Future Competitor to Uber, Lyft, and Waymo

Previously, Elon Musk stated that thanks to Tesla’s new autonomous driving technology, there would no longer be a need to take the bus. According to him, an autonomous car ride would cost the same as a bus ticket. Thus, Tesla is expected to offer a service that will compete with the likes of Uber, Lyft, and Waymo. In fact, Alphabet’s subsidiary already offers autonomous taxi rides via an app in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. Currently, this service, called Waymo One, already completes 100,000 rides per week.

For now, we don’t know how Tesla’s new autonomous driving system will work, and it’s unclear whether the presentation will be immediately followed by a launch.

A Service That Will Be Geographically Limited?

Regarding availability, it’s highly likely that Tesla’s robotaxis will initially be offered only in a limited geographical area. For example, Waymo’s driverless taxis are currently only available in three U.S. cities. It’s also worth noting that Tesla’s supervised autonomous driving service is currently unavailable in Europe. However, the automaker has indicated, via a roadmap published on X, that it plans to deploy this service in Europe in the first quarter of 2025, provided it gets the green light from regulators.

Finally, it’s important to note that Tesla already offers an autonomous driving system requiring driver supervision in the U.S. However, Elon Musk’s company is also developing a more advanced system that would allow its vehicles to become robotaxis. This technology is expected to be unveiled on October 10, during an event in Los Angeles. Recently, Elon Musk mentioned that buses may no longer be needed, as the cost of a robotaxi ride would be comparable to that of a bus ticket.
