The anticipated Apple iPhone SE 4, rumored to be budget-friendly, may inherit features like Face ID and mirror the design of the iPhone 14.
Though not as renowned as Apple’s flagship iPhones, the iPhone SE has seen a resurgence with new models in 2020 and 2022. The future of the iPhone SE, however, is shrouded in uncertainty. Conflicting rumors and reports are circulating about the possible release of an iPhone SE 4, with some insights from the respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggesting its possible cancellation.
Apple, typically reticent about future products, has not confirmed any plans for new iPhone SE models. With the discontinuation of the iPhone Mini, the iPhone SE is now pivotal as the compact, more economical option in Apple’s range.
The potential for enhancements in the compact iPhone SE is significant. Despite the 2022 iPhone SE’s praise for its affordability and classic home button by my colleague Patrick Holland, he noted its outdated design and absence of night mode photography. Competitors like Samsung and Google have upgraded their budget phones, offering premium features like high refresh rates and multiple cameras in models such as the Google Pixel 7A and Samsung Galaxy A54 5G.
Only an official announcement from Apple can confirm what the iPhone SE 4 will bring. Predictions from Kuo, combined with other leaks and Apple’s history of product launches, hint at possible features for Apple’s upcoming budget iPhone.
The launch date of the iPhone SE 4 remains a mystery, with fluctuating predictions from Kuo over the years. In 2019, he mentioned an iPhone SE with a full-screen design akin to the iPhone XR. However, subsequent iPhone SE models have retained the older iPhone 8-like design, leading to speculation about the status of Kuo’s projected model.
Kuo’s 2023 forecasts have been inconsistent. He initially reported a cancellation of an iPhone SE planned for 2024, later suggesting its revival, and then speculated that the model in question might just be a prototype for testing Apple’s in-house 5G chip.
Reports from MacRumors indicate Apple is developing a new iPhone SE with notable upgrades, potentially launching by 2025.
The release pattern of the iPhone SE has been irregular, with the first model in March 2016, the second in April 2020, and the third in March 2022. Predicting a 2024 or 2025 launch aligns with Apple’s recent timeline, though there’s a precedent for longer intervals between releases.
The upcoming iPhone SE might feature a 6.1-inch screen, a significant size increase from the current 4.7-inch display.
The design inspiration for the next iPhone SE is still unclear. Reports from Jon Prosser and Ross Young suggest a larger screen and a design resembling the iPhone XR. More recent MacRumors articles from September and November 2023 speculate that the iPhone SE 4 might adopt a modified iPhone 14 chassis.
Kuo’s post from February 2023 also hinted at a possible OLED screen for the iPhone SE 4, a major upgrade from the current LCD displays. OLED offers enhanced contrast and deeper blacks.
The future of Apple’s Touch ID in the iPhone SE is uncertain. MacRumors suggests that the next model will feature Face ID, diverging from Kuo’s 2019 prediction of a smaller notch without Face ID and a power button-integrated Touch ID.
Following the shift to USB-C in the iPhone 15, the iPhone SE 4 might also abandon the Lightning connector. MacRumors also hints at the inclusion of the Action button, a feature currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.
The iPhone SE 4 might sport a single 48-megapixel rear camera, aligning with the main camera of the iPhone 15 but lacking the multiple cameras of the more expensive models.
The iPhone SE typically shares its processor with the latest flagship iPhone. Kuo’s suggestion of an Apple-made 5G chip aligns with this pattern, although his later comments cast doubt on this prediction. MacRumors also reports an Apple 5G modem in the works.
Apple’s acquisition of Intel’s modem business in 2019 fueled speculation about in-house 5G modem production, potentially reducing reliance on suppliers like Qualcomm.
The iPhone SE 4, shrouded in mystery and speculation, could be one of Apple’s most exciting updates in years. If rumors hold true, we might see a significant leap in the iPhone SE’s design, functionality, and screen size in the next year or by 2025.
