The OnePlus 12, possibly the last flagship smartphone of the year, has just been launched, initially exclusive to China. Global availability is expected around January, making it a highly anticipated release.
This device is particularly noteworthy, thanks to its impressive features, many of which OnePlus had already teased before the official unveiling.
One standout aspect is its battery – a substantial 5,400mAh unit, exceeding the capacity of most smartphones by over 400mAh. It also supports rapid 100W charging, with a still notable 50W option for wireless charging.
In terms of power, the OnePlus 12 could surpass even the best gaming phones. It’s equipped with the advanced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and offers up to a staggering 24GB of RAM, a configuration not yet common in the market. For context, phones like the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra use the previous generation chipset, and very few have as much RAM.
The phone also boasts generous storage options up to 1TB. Its 6.82-inch 1440 x 3168 AMOLED display, featuring a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 4,500nits, nearly doubles the brightness of many competitors.
While the cameras may not be the highlight, they are still quite formidable. The OnePlus 12 sports a 48MP primary camera, a 48MP ultra-wide lens, and a 64MP telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom – specs mirroring those of the OnePlus Open.
The design, reminiscent of the OnePlus 11 with its large, circular camera block, offers improved water resistance with an IP65 rating. However, it’s still not on par with the best in terms of submersion resistance.
The OnePlus 12 is currently available in China in black, green, and white. The base model, with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, starts at CNY¥4,299 (about $610 / £480 / AU$1,000).
OnePlus is a brand of smartphones and other consumer electronics. It was founded in December 2013 by former Oppo vice president Pete Lau and Carl Pei. OnePlus is known for producing high-quality smartphones that often incorporate many of the features found in premium phones, but at a more affordable price point. The brand has gained significant popularity and a strong following among tech enthusiasts for its focus on high performance, sleek design, and value for money.
OnePlus is headquartered in Shenzhen, China, and operates as a subsidiary of BBK Electronics, a major Chinese electronics corporation. BBK Electronics also owns other well-known smartphone brands like Oppo, Vivo, and Realme. Despite being part of a larger conglomerate, OnePlus operates independently with its own branding, product development, and marketing strategies.
OnePlus’s approach to marketing and community engagement, including its invitation-only system in its early years, helped it build a strong online community. The company’s tagline, “Never Settle,” reflects its commitment to continuously improving and refining its products based on user feedback and technological advancements. OnePlus smartphones are known for their OxygenOS user interface, which is praised for its smooth performance and user-friendly experience, built on top of the Android operating system.
