The End of the Traditional iPad? Apple May Be Planning a Radical Name Change

The arrival of a new generation of the basic iPad with an A18 chip could mark the end of an era in Apple’s naming strategy. After abandoning the classic numbering system with the latest version and opting for names centered on technical features, the company may now be considering a shift in the identity of its entry-level tablet.

In this way, Apple would be moving away from generic titles to adopt a more distinctive nomenclature aligned with its recent product launches.

Evolution of naming strategy: from generic iPad to a possible iPad Neo

For years, Apple maintained a clear numbering system for its entry-level iPad, with generations easily identifiable by consumers. However, the release of the iPad (A16) broke with that tradition, removing generational references and focusing instead on the processor as the main identifier.

This change, while clarifying performance, did not fully resolve the challenges of differentiation and positioning within the product lineup.

The most recent example of this new philosophy can be seen in the MacBook line. When Apple introduced the MacBook Neo, it avoided a generic name and chose a label that, according to Greg Joswiak, aimed to give the product “identity—something short and catchy, fitting alongside Air and Pro, but also conveying novelty.”

Joswiak, in a conversation with Mark Spoonauer of Tom’s Guide, emphasized that “Neo literally means new, or reinvention,” and that the name was ideal to describe Apple’s vision of an accessible, high-value laptop.

What will the next iPad be called?

In light of these statements and the evolution of naming across other products, it would not be surprising if the next basic iPad adopted the “Neo” suffix, according to 9to5Mac. However, there is a significant obstacle: the new model will not represent a design revolution, as it will retain the visual language introduced in 2022, limiting changes to internal components and the A18 processor.

This could hinder the introduction of a name that suggests total reinvention, leaving the door open for Apple to keep its current naming or seek a new identity formula when a truly innovative leap occurs.

The debate over how Apple will name its next entry-level iPad remains open. The recent move away from vague names and the trend toward more distinctive, meaningful titles within the product family could signal a significant branding transformation.

John Ternus says Apple is about to “change the world again”

With John Ternus stepping into Apple’s leadership, the company is entering a phase where artificial intelligence and innovation in connected devices will take center stage. After fifteen years under Tim Cook’s leadership, Ternus assumes the role with the intention of deepening AI integration into users’ daily lives, while preserving the values that have defined the brand.

In his first remarks as future CEO, Ternus struck an optimistic, forward-looking tone, stating—according to Bloomberg—that Apple is experiencing “the most exciting phase” in its recent history. He highlighted artificial intelligence as the driving force behind a new wave of products and services with the potential to transform the market. “We are about to change the world again,” Ternus emphasized.

Projects currently in development include devices such as smart glasses and AirPods with integrated cameras. According to Bloomberg, Apple is experimenting with up to four different glasses models and exploring the creation of keychain-style accessories equipped with imaging technology.

The goal is for all these devices to connect with the iPhone and leverage the power of artificial intelligence, promoting even deeper integration of AI into users’ everyday routines.
